Civil War Project
Student Commissions
APPLICATION FOR FUNDING
Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the US Civil War and led by George Washington University and Arena
Stage, the Civil War Project seeks to gather the resources of the academic and art communities in a wide-ranging
exploration of civil conflict. At the center of this effort is the commission and performance of new works.
GW’s Office of the President has established a commissioning fund to support student-generated interdisciplinary
performance projects related to Civil War Project themes and grounded in current scholarship.
Student projects may be awarded up to $1000 each. The Civil War Project expects to fund 10 works in total over
the next two academic years.
NATURE OF ELIGIBLE PROJECTS: Student civil war projects must bring together student performing artists
and student researchers in the humanities, social sciences, international affairs, public health, law, or medicine.
Research about civil war—its nature, genesis, consequences, whether social, economic, political, cultural, or
psychological—must culminate in a performance (theatrical, musical, dance, spoken word). Likewise, student
artists must demonstrate how the proposed process and interpretative stance have been informed by recent
scholarship.
WHO: Teams of GW students—undergraduate or graduate— or GW-sponsored student organizations are eligible.
Preference will be given to projects that incorporate mentorship from faculty.
WHEN: Commissioned works may be performed during AY 2015-16.
WHERE: Performances may be on campus or site-specific.
APPLICATIONS: Interested student groups must submit letters of interest and completed applications.
 For AY 2014-15 projects: please completed applications by September 15, 2015.
