2015 - 2016
ALL FINE ARTS ELECTIVE CLASSES ARE FOR ONE SEMESTER ONLY:
Class Cost for Fine Arts Elective Classes:
$160 per class includes $10 building fee per class
Comic Class
Mrs. Melissa Jones
This is a two semester class.
Learn to create and refine characters, create environments, learn perspective, lettering and word
bubble placement (yes, this is a skill in and of itself) pencil, ink, page layouts, thumb nailing,
panels, storyboarding, sequential art, and assembly. In the end, you will have a comic, you
produced! No prior knowledge necessary. And you don't need to write your own script. That will
be provided, if you want.
Portraits
Mrs. Melissa Jones
We will explore various mediums as we focus on how to draw the face. We will use a grid
system, basic layouts and composition, value studies, when relevant. We will tackle this using
many different styles. Pop, minimal, art nouveau, psychedelic, traditional charcoal, etc. It's as
much about exploring art styles as it is drawing faces.
Children's Book Illustration Class.
Mrs. Melissa Jones
This is a 2 semester class.
We will take an existing story (unless you already have one), and take it all the way to finish. We
will tackle character designs, color choice, layout, the ins and outs of making a book, etc... In the
end, you will have something ready to self publish (or submit!)
Mixed Media.
Mrs. Melissa Jones
Work with watercolor, gouache, acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, etc to explore the beauty of how
these mediums work together. Projects on what these wonderful mediums can do.
Study Skills
Mrs. Aleta Sheetz
Middle School and High School Level
"I forgot my book!"
"I did my homework, but left it at home!"
"I can't remember what the assignment is!"
This class will help with these issues and more. Your student will learn organizational and study skills for
both at home and school academic settings. Note-taking and test-taking strategies will also be mastered.
This class is especially helpful for students with ADD/ADHD and students that live in two homes. Your
student's self-esteem will increase as they learn time management and their grades improve.
Sharpen Your Shakespeare
Miss Victoria Boyce
Come learn and analyze some of Shakespeare's greatest works. We will start with learning about his
sonnets, from memorizing a couple to breaking them down and learning what Shakespeare was saying.
We will read one of his great works and have discussions about what he meant in each part of the play.
Finally the students will be picking a monologue from a list of some of Shakespeare best works which we
will memorize, discuss, and learn how to properly preform.
Biblical Archaealogy
Dr. Paul McCracken
Archaeology is the study of human activity in the past, primarily through the recovery and
analysis of the material culture and environmental data that they have left behind. It is a science
that employs the scientific method. This class will focus on how archaeology can lead to a better
understanding of the Bible. It should be stated that the purpose of Biblical Archaeology is not an
attempt to prove or disprove the scriptures. It is using the science of archaeology – studying the
artifacts, architecture, and culture of ancient people – to give the students a broader
understanding of the events in the biblical record as well as many biblical teachings.
Critical Thinking
Dr. Paul McCracken
The goal of this class to learn how to consider problems logically. We will use a good deal of
"games" as we learn, including games such as logic puzzles, Sudoku, and other activities that
promote developing analytical thought. We'll even apply mathematical principals to such games
as "Twenty Questions". While we hope that this class will be enjoyable for the students, the
ultimate goal will be to improve in logical and rational analysis.
Public Speaking
Dr. Paul McCracken
This class will begin with the principles of public speaking as they developed over time. Most of the term
will be spent preparing and presenting brief individual monologues. A student who does not wish to
present regularly should probably not choose this elective. However, a student who is not comfortable
speaking in public but would like to gain confidence in this regard should find this class to be very
helpful. Although most of our work will be based on speaking to a group, we will also include
information on other forms of public speaking such as a job interview.
Beginning Directing
Miss Victoria Boyce
In this class we will learn about all the ends and outs of directing plays and musicals. How play and
musicals are different and how they are both very different from movies. We will also be going over all
the jobs a director has and how that varies from a community theatre director and a professional
director. Finally the students will pick a scene from a movie/play/or musical to direct which will be
performed at the open house!
Vocal Ensemble
Mrs. Kim Jones
We will apply theory, sight-singing, vocal techniques, and prepare to perform these
beautiful pieces at the end of the elective. Students should have some basic experience in reading
and expressing music. Auditions required.
