Active Learning Methodologies using ICT
in the Primary Classroom
This course is designed for primary teachers of all class levels who wish to get practical ideas and
practice in integrating and using active learning methodologies in ICT to support their classroom
teaching.
Session 1:
This literacy focused practical session introduces and engages participants with each
of the methodologies through an ICT based teaching task. Participants will learn how to easily set up
and maintain a digital portfolio as they investigate a range of suitable online tools and resources
which can be applied in their own classrooms to support planning, teaching and learning. The session
concludes with an overview of session two’s content and simple actions teachers can take to use
these teacher friendly resources in their own classroom.
Session 2:
This numeracy focused hands-on session will engage participants in a range of online
problem solving tasks and activities before investigating other relevant numeracy resources which can
be easily used to support teaching and learning. Participants will also investigate a range of new and
exciting online tools that highlight the purposeful use of the environment for learning before examining
how these useful resources can be meaningfully incorporated in planning, teaching and learning.

Finding and selecting information – Post
Primary
This course is designed for Post-primary teachers of all subjects who wish to get practical ideas
as to how they can introduce safe searching practices to their classrooms.
Most Post-Primary pupils use technology for games and communication but it cannot be guaranteed
that they know how to find and evaluate the suitability of information. They are inextricably linked to
the comprehension strategies of skimming, scanning, determining importance and summarising.
These are skills worth developing with an array of ICT tools and applications to assist us. We have
moved from an era of limited information sources to an era where we have almost unlimited sources
of information. This workshop focuses on search skills - looking for information safely in one safe
source; using a variety of search functions to get to the information required; introducing a number of
student safe search engines; collating information found for later use; attributing the source of
information found.

Assessment using ICT – Primary
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce teachers to the ways in which ICT tools can be used for
assessment of and for learning in the classroom. Teachers will be introduced to ways in which ICT
tools can be used to build interactive assignments and track student progress in real-time. Teachers
will also explore the ways in which ICT tools can be used to evaluate learning outcomes in the
classroom. The effective use of ICT in a primary school setting allows for assessment strategies to be
integrated across the curriculum and to evaluate learning outcomes.
Workshop Objectives:
To define assessment.
To distinguish assessment of and for learning
To know and understand the key elements of assessment for learning
To identify ICT tools to support assessment and evaluation strategies at primary level
To use a selection of ICT tools, including Padlet, Mentimeter, Socrative, Kahoot, Edmodo,
StudyStack, EdPuzzle and Blendspace, to gather, interpret and use assessment information to
inform teaching and learning
Note: Participants should have intermediate Internet skills. This would be a great workshop to start a
professional journey online in order to inform teaching and learning.

closing files). All participants must have their own/school activated tablet (iPad) for the duration of this
course, an individual/school iTunes account and an individual email address.
Participants are required to bring with them:
• An activated iPad* (see below for explanation)
• An individual/school iTunes account
• An individual email address
*An activated iPad is one that has been set up and aligned with an iTunes account – all details can be
found at http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/essentials/
Module 1: Getting to know the tablet (iPad) and some apps
This module provides an introduction to using a tablet for novice users, covering navigation and inbuilt tools such as multi-gesture controls and the integrated camera. Participants learn how to access
and use both pre-loaded and new apps. As well as learning about their practical uses, the apps are
critically analysed in the context of active learning methodologies.
Module 2: Generating content for literacy and numeracy
This module covers how to create your own teaching resources for literacy and numeracy. It includes
maths trails and ways to use tablets/apps for open-ended investigation (problem solving).
Module 3: Literacy apps and bringing our stories to life
This module focuses on apps that can be used to support literacy in the context of key topics to
include reading, writing, oral language, vocabulary and spelling. There is a particular focus on the
multimedia presentation of stories in this module, such as comics; animations, presentations and
