Review for Retest on Meiosis, Chromosomes, Chromosomal Abnormalities,
Mendel’s Law and intro to Genetics
This review must be completed and turned in at the retest time in order to qualify to take the retest.
1. Draw and label the parts of the structure of a chromosome that illustrates how it is packaged.
2. A cell with 6 chromosomes goes through meiosis. Draw and label the phases (use different
colors to illustrate the homologous pairs).
3. On your pictures for number 2, identify where the following occur and define the
words,…crossing over, non-disjunction, synapsis, independent assortment
4. On your pictures for number 2, label each phase as diploid or haploid and single or duplicated
(chromosomes).
5. AABbCCDDEeFf
a. How many traits are represented?
b. How many chromosomes are represented?
c. Is this the genotype of a haploid or diploid cell? Germ cell or gamete? Gamete or
zygote?
d. How many genetically different gametes could be formed following these traits alone?
e. How many chromosomes would each gamete contain?
6. Compare and contrast the following pairs of words…
a. Genotype and phenotype
b. Homologous/pure and heterozygous/hybrid
c. Somatic and germ
d. Gamete and zygote
e. Male genotype and female genotype
f. Fertilization and meiosis
g. Allele and gene
7. How do we analyze a human’s set of chromosomes to determine if there are abnormalities in
the chromosome number? What if it is an unborn child? What are the two categories of
chromosomes?
8. Name and describe the four types of chromosomal structure abnormalities. When do these
occur?
9. Name and describe the three types of chromosome number abnormalities. When do these
occur?
10. What is unique about the formation of an egg when compared to a sperm?
11. Name and describe Mendel’s principles.
12. If a yellow flowering plant and blue flowering plant were crossed, what would the phenotype
of the offspring be if
a. It is a codominance inheritance pattern?
b. It is an incomplete dominance inheritance pattern?
13. Be able to work genetics problems – determine parents, offspring, genotypic and phenotypic
ratios for complete dominance, codominance, and incomplete dominance inheritance
patterns.
