Senior Technical Officer in Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory
Grade D £23,619 - £27,328 (starting on bottom of scale)
The Department of Science within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science is seeking to
appoint a Senior Technical Officer to provide technical expertise in a busy Inorganic Chemistry
Laboratory.
As a member of the larger technical team the post holder will work with the other technical staff
providing support and assistance to both Academic staff and students. The appointee will contribute
to the maintenance and operation of laboratories and workshops within the Faculty including all
aspects of health and safety.
The Senior Technical Officer will have very good interpersonal skills and will conduct her/himself in a
helpful and courteous manner.
Job Description
Main Purpose of Job
To provide technical support in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory
Principal Responsibilities and Duties
To provide technical support for staff and students in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory.
Preparation of all chemical materials for undergraduate experiments.
Follow correct Health and Safety procedures regarding the safe handling, storage and preparation of
solvents and solutions.
Follow correct Health and Safety policies and procedures within the inorganic laboratory.
Ensure the correct procedures are adopted for any concentrated acid digestions and specific use of
the instrumentation involved. Be responsible for the safe storage and stock control of the
concentrated acids.
Maintenance of specific inorganic laboratory equipment.

Essential
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work on individual or team basis

Knowledge
Essential
HNC/HND or above in appropriate scientific area
Specific knowledge in chemistry laboratory
techniques
Specific knowledge and use of solvents and
chemicals and the hazards associated
Health and Safety procedures within laboratories
Desirable
Knowledge on the use of I.C.P. (Inductively
Coupled Plasma) Emission Spectrometers
Knowledge of Flame Photometer
Knowledge of Assessnet the universities risk
assessment package or previous knowledge in
producing risk assessments in laboratories
Experience

At least 2 years experience of working in a
scientific laboratory

Experience of working in an inorganic chemistry
laboratory

Willingness to undertake further training
