COUNSELOR- SSSP (Student Success and Support Program)
The Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) Counselor serves as a generalist and regular member of the
counseling faculty with an assignment to coordinate and implement Student Success and Support Program
mandated services.
Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the SSSP Counselor to coordinate the planning,
development, implementation and evaluation of the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) as it relates
as it relates to the mandated services of orientation, assessment, counseling/advising, educational planning and
follow-up services; and general counseling that will result in the educational, personal and vocational development
of students.
As a generalist, the SSSP Counselor provides academic, vocational, career and personal counseling. The
counselor teaches counseling courses, leads workshops, orientations and seminars; assists in developing and
implementing necessary retention programs for at risk students to meet the needs and support the advancement
of the vision, mission and values of the Grossmont Cuyamaca Community College District.
The counselor assumes responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for assisting in the development
and assessment of student learning outcomes; program review and planning and participating in department
activities.
Contract counselors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs,
courses and other experiences that result in the educational growth of the students. The counselor will be
expected to actively participate on campus and the broader community by serving on departmental and college
committees and taking a leadership role in campus, community, and professional organizations. This position
may include a combination of day and evening assignments. Cuyamaca College is strongly committed to

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance
counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or
marriage, family and child counseling; OR
Bachelor's in any of the above and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); OR
Current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as a Counselor; OR
The equivalent. If you are applying based on "the equivalent", you must complete a Full-Time Academic
Equivalency Form as part of the application procedures.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Experience in educational and career counseling at a community college or university.
2) Training and experience working with individuals and groups in providing personal and crisis counseling.
3) Experience advising students at-risk students about certificates, associate degrees and transfer
requirements.
4) Demonstrate ability to use technology in providing counseling services.
5) Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, community college students with diverse academic,
socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds as well as students with disabilities.
6) Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
7) Experience teaching career planning, college success and other personal development courses at the
post-secondary level.
8) Experience working with special populations, including students from diverse backgrounds.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Two years experience in general counseling at a California Community College.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
 Coordinate and organize day to day operations of the SSSP including assistance with projects and
activities, supplemental instruction programs and other forms of SSSP instructional and student support
services.
 Coordinate and assist with the development of SSSP plans, goals and objectives including staffing,
facilities, curriculum and educational philosophy. Ensure consistency of plans with other College and
District Plans.
 Act as liaison between the College and other educational institutions (K-12, colleges, and universities)
and/or industry professionals and enhances services to the SSSP and its participants
 Plan and conduct workshops related to the matriculation process.
 In collaboration with administrative leadership, address, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of SSSP
Counseling-related services.
 Coordinate with Admissions & Records, Assessment, High School Outreach, Categorical Programs,
Information Systems (IS) and the English and Math instructional departments on SSSP implementation and
MIS data.
 Provide input and assist the College and District in implementing the annual SSSP Program Plan.
 Provide leadership to Counseling in all SSSP activities.
 Establish and maintain communication and effective working relationships with campus and District
resources to ensure required services are provided to SSSP project participants.
 Provide direction for various phases and operations of the matriculation process including educational
planning, assessment, orientation, advisement and follow up; Provide feedback and suggestions to
Administrator regarding the effectiveness of matriculation for improvement of the matriculation process and
procedures.
 Work with counseling department chair, faculty members and classified personnel to staff and coordinate
program activities.
 Work with sensitive and confidential student information.
 Relate well and work effectively in a participatory manner with all segments of the college community which
includes working with students, faculty, staff and business and industry representatives of diverse
backgrounds.
 Lead, implement and facilitate changes; communicate effectively and persuasively both orally and in
writing.
 Implement emerging technology effectively among the campus and District community.
 Plan, organize and complete assignments with limited supervision, while meeting deadlines.
 Develop and implement activities, events, plans, strategies, projects, goals, objectives, processes and
services in support of assigned programs.
 Plan and organize work to meet deadlines.
 Communicate effectively orally and in writing to express difficult and complex concepts clearly and
concisely.
 Use personal computer utilizing various software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation
programs, and database management including the internet).
