The 8-member team, moderated by Mrs. Jenny Herron, reads and studies 8 different Eliot Rosewater winners (Best Young Adult Hoosier Books) and prepares for written tests and lightning-round stages of competition against surrounding area high school teams. The team includes: Jackson McGrath, Brenna Holland, Bailey Lewis, Danila Burnham, Kaylee Titsworth, Audrey Gelb, Abigail Helvering, and Willy Dimond. Several entries have already been received for the library/media center’s “What Makes You hAPPy?” best educational app contest. Students are encouraged to share their favorite educational apps for use on iPhone, iPod, iPad, or Smartphone. See a librarians for details, the deadline is February 18. The winner receives a $25.00 iTunes gift cardJ Recently our technology crew installed the computer game “Civilization IV” on one of the library/media center’s computers. Students are welcome to access this and play during resource and before & after school. Recent studies indicate that educational gaming is gaining popularity among educators, especially in math and science. “Civilization IV” has been reviewed by educational journals as instructive in social and political history. The American Library Association announced January 10th the top young adult media awards, and several of these winners are displayed now in our library, available for check out by students, parents, and staff. Remember, because we’re an Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library branch, items checked out at any IMCPL branch can be returned here at CHS, and students may request any IMCPL item be sent here for check out. ~~~~~ Camp Cathedral Summer 2011 - Register Online Today! Thank you. ~~~~~ If anyone has tickets to events i.e. Pacers, Ice, IRT, Circus etc that you are unable to use please contact Mike Feeney at 968-7348 or mfeeney@cathedral-irish.org We would like to make unused tickets available to our teachers or students who would otherwise not be able to attend these events. Dear parents of seniors, The senior class has traditionally attended a Shakespearean play at the IRT. We are continuing that tradition by having the seniors attend a matinee production of IRT’s In Acting Shakespeare on Monday, February 21. The tickets cost $9.25, and students need to bring that money to their English teachers as soon as possible. Teachers would 5 appreciate if students could bring exact change or pay by check made out to Cathedral High School. Their payment of that money is your approval of their attendance. Transportation is not provided by Cathedral High School, so students will need to drive themselves. We urge them to carpool with other students. The most reasonable parking rates can be found in the Circle Center Mall parking garages. We will give them a map to the theatre. The students will attend the matinee that begins at 10:00 AM. We ask that they meet us at the IRT by 9:40. The play will last approximately two hours. After the performance, the students are released for the day. They do not report to school in the morning, and they are free after the performance. Finally, we will be discussing theatre etiquette and asking students to dress appropriately for the play. Because the students represent Cathedral High School, we require them to be on their best behavior. We ask young men to wear shirts and ties and dress pants. Young ladies may wear appropriate length dresses or skirts or dress pants. No students should wear jeans. We appreciate your support in this area. If you have any problems or questions, please contact Mrs. Keyes at Cathedral High School. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.” As Feb nods its head in icy welcome, we have the following inspirational service opportunities for our Cathedral students: Class Service Projects “The night is advanced, the day is at hand, Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light”. Rom 13:12 Our service at Cathedral helps us share the armor of light and hope with our sisters and brothers in need in Indianapolis. February greets us with the following service activities: first, we will conclude the drive for the refugee center at Catholic Charities from Jan 26-Feb 4, led by Refugee Council Ambassadors Katy Hoeper and Liz Subrin. Also, in February, our freshman will be helping at the Christmas Store on Thursday, Feb 10 to prepare for next year’s Christmas. On Saturday, Feb 12, our juniors will prepare and serve a tasty lunch at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. Join our service leadership workshop on February 19 as Cathedral alums inspire us with their life experiences in serving community needs. We invite students and parents to save the date of Feb 26 to help at University of Indianapolis in our MAKE IT MINE IPS outreach. Details on all of these on-going class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities as wonderful expressions of our ability to gather at the table with our brothers and sisters. Grant Writing Any students interested in working on grants for Marion Country projects, please see Mrs. Halstead about your interest or contact her via email at chalstead@cathedral-irish.org. The deadline for these grants would be Feb 18. USO Evening at Camp Atterbury Over thirty Cathedral students and ten adults traveled to Camp Atterbury last Saturday evening. We recorded valentine video messages and shared an evening of games and solidarity with soldiers from New Mexico and Pennsylvania heading out on a peace keeping mission to Kosovo. Our hearts grew in solemn acknowledgement of the commitment served by these men and women for our country and we enjoyed the opportunity to directly thank them. The soldiers all expressed their appreciation for our time spent with them and we left, knowing that we had received the richest gift, the honor of saluting them. This endeavor has been wonderfully led by junior Liz Subrin for two years now. Our next trip will be March 12. S.A.I.L (Students Active in Initiative and Leadership) Workshop Students are invited to a leadership workshop on Saturday, Feb 19 from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM at Cathedral in the SLC. The fee for this workshop is $25. The morning session will be guided by the leadership experiences of four noteworthy Cathedral alumni, who are actively engaged in not for profit agencies in the Indianapolis community. The afternoon session will include break-out sessions to focus upon the work and worth of these agencies in our Indianapolis community. Our students will have an opportunity to direct how the collective donation of $10 per person (part of the workshop fee of $25) will be used by the agency to further its community work. We will close the session with a zumba and ukulele lesson. If needed, scholarship may be applied for the workshop fee. See registration form and flyer for details. Four service hours may be earned. Any questions, please contact Cheri Halstead, email chalstead@cathedral-irish.org or 968 7317. “Make It Mine” Service Outreach Cathedral students will lead another wonderful day of engagement for IPS middle school students on Saturday, February 26 at the University of Indianapolis. Cathedral artists, musicians, athletes, scholars and dancers will lead six activity centers regarding music, art, athletics, reading, writing, and art. The theme of the day is MAKE IT MINE. More than 150 Cathedral students will be needed to be reading buddies during the next year and to encourage the reading of EIGHT books. Our next MAKE IT MINE event will take place at University of Indianapolis on Saturday, February 26. Reserve this date now in your calendar to help out on this special day. We performed a smaller Make It Mine event on December 4 at IPS 106. Mrs. Foster, the school principal, shares that the rest of her fifth and sixth grade students cannot wait until our February 26 event at the University of Indianapolis. Click here for the sign up form. Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the service hours. For the 2010-11academic year, service hours for seniors were due December 1, 2010 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2010-11, freshmen, sophomore and junior 16 hours are due March 1, 2011. The status of service hours for these underclassmen will be shown as satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the third quarter report card. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month. The balance of 2010 and 2011 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs. Service Reflection They say it takes a minute to serve a special person, An hour to appreciate them, A day to love them, But then an entire life to forget them. May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide. Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 20010-11 are due on March 1, 2011. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2010-2011 were due on December 1, 2010. Click here for the 2010-11 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2009-10 Service Documentation form. Click here for the Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance. Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not accept these efforts as service hours. Meditation: Meditation: Malachi 3:1-4 The Presentation of the Lord He is like the refiner’s fire. (Malachi 3:2) In the last chapter of the last book of the Old Testament, the prophet Malachi peers into the future to announce a great arrival: “Suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord whom you seek” (Malachi 3:1). Five centuries or so later, Simeon and Anna stepped forward as faithful sentinels, ready to greet “the Messiah of the Lord” as he enters the Jerusalem Temple for the first time (Luke 2:26). It’s a familiar and heartwarming scene—a beautiful child, glowing parents, a humble offering, and heartfelt praise. But what does this low-key “presentation” have to do with the grand entrance that Malachi described? He had warned of a fear-some day of judgment, when the Lord would take action against the faithlessness of his priests and people. Right there in the Temple, the fire of God’s holiness would blaze out to purify those who repented of their sins and to punish those who refused. Looking down at the baby in his arms, Simeon caught some glimpse of this coming judgment and purification. He didn’t know that Jesus would return to the Temple one day, blazing with God’s own anger that his house of prayer had been made “a den of thieves” (Luke 19:46). And he couldn’t profess, as we do, that Jesus “will come again in glory to judge the living 26 and the dead.” But led by the Spirit, Simeon recognized Jesus as “a sign that will be contradicted”—a Messiah “destined for the fall and rise of many” (Luke 2:34). The Jerusalem Temple is long gone, but today, in the temple of our own hearts, God is inviting us to wait and watch. So let’s open the doors and welcome him in. But let’s open ourselves to all of Jesus—not just the sweet child who wins our hearts with tenderness but the Lord of glory who comes to purify us and make us holy. Yes, this means repentance, self-denial, the cross. But what’s all that compared to the end result? The more we let Jesus in, we more we know the joy of becoming a holy people shining with the radiance of the Lord of Hosts. “Jesus, what an awesome offer—to share your life and become like you! Come into my heart, and make yourself at home. Whatever it takes, make me your own in every way.” Blessings, Principal Cathedral High School dworland@cathedral-irish.org 27
