COMMUNITY
Santa Ynez Valley (Santa Barbara County)
Population: Approximately 20,000
Santa Ynez is a rural community located about 35
miles north of Santa Barbara. Major sources of
income are tourism, small business, agriculture,
service related industry and the Chumash Casino.
The agricultural enterprise is largely horse ranches,
grapes and wineries, apple production and small
contract farming.
The students come from predominately middle to
upper income families, but there have been
increasing numbers of low to middle income students
enrolling. Six elementary schools feed into the high
school district from an area comprising more than
1,000 square miles. Many parents work at
professional, white collar occupations and may
commute out of the area to work. Increasing
numbers of families are in service industry
occupations.

NOTES:
(1) SYHS began using Common Core Math
beginning in the 2014-15 school year. The
traditional math sequence was grandfathered
in for those on that track. The terminology
for our CC is Math 1 (Math 101), Math 2
(Math 201) and Math 3 (Math 301).
(2) For the 2014-15 school year, SYHS lost its
French teacher after the school year started.
As a result, students used the Middlebury
Interactive French program. No honors
courses were offered in French as a result.
(3) Many students complete their US History
and Government/Econ courses through the
Dual Enrollment agreement we have with
Allan Hancock College.
