Secret Garden & Independent Novel Assignments
You will complete the following activities in your reading journal. Be sure to label each assignment
clearly. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have assignments completed by their due
date and that they are showing high quality work. Pace yourself. Use your agenda to help give
yourself some guidelines.
* Read The Secret Garden chapters 3-14.
Literature Webs
You must complete one Literature Web for the Secret Garden on two chapters of your choice (one
web for each of the selected chapters) from chapters 3-14. Due by Feb. 6th.
You must complete one Literature Web on two chapters of your choice (one web for each of the
selected chapters) in your independent novel. Due by Feb. 6th.
Vocabulary
I have given you some vocabulary words and page numbers. Use context clues to define those
words. Keep a list of other words new to you and what you think they mean. Write the page
number down as well. Select 2 vocabulary words and complete a Vocabulary Web for each word.
Staple the webs into your reading journal. Due by Feb. 6th.
As you read your independent novel, record at least 2 words that you are unfamiliar with. These
words will be vocabulary for your book. You are to do 2 Vocabulary Webs for your independent
novel. Due by Feb. 6th.
Change Matrix
Begin completing the Change Matrix for The Secret Garden and your Independent novel. You may
do this on an additional piece of paper and staple it into your reading journal. Include specific
evidence form the stories to support the various changes that you note on the matrix. This will not
be due until both novels are completed, but begin working on it as you read both books.
Written Reflections
These will be written in your Reader Response journal. You will do this for both the Secret Garden
and your independent novel. * Yes, you may take your reader response journal home for this
assignment. Just remember to get it from the crate. You want to make any entry after about every
50 pages, or more frequently if you find something that you need to respond. Your responses are to
be of high quality and have some deep thought put into them. Look at page 27 in your text for ideas
for response entries. (We also glued suggestions in the front of your journal as well.) I will be
collecting and checking Reader Response journals regularly. Due by Feb. 6th
