2. Rationale for discontinuing South Asia Studies
The purpose of this proposal is to discontinue the South Asia Studies as a Minor for the BA.
The South Asia Studies (SAST) programme was run by the Sociology and Anthropology department but
involved staff from other departments (e.g. History, Religious Studies, Music, etc) and the use of courses cocoded from other programmes. With the departure of a number of staff who were central to the programme,
it became impossible to offer the required range of courses to support the minor. Entry to the Minor was
suspended and the decision on its future deferred until 2015.
The department and College now believe that staffing is not sufficient to supporting the offering of SAST for
the BA Minor in the foreseeable future and wishes to discontinue it. There have been no student enrolments
in the Minor or SAST courses offered since 2011.
SAST courses will be discontinued via the MCCS.

as a subject for the Certificate in Arts, the Graduate Diploma in Arts, BA (Hons), MA, MSc and PhD.

The History and Philosophy of Science (HAPS) programme was run by the Philosophy Department but involved
staff from other departments (e.g. Mathematics, Chemistry) and the use of courses co-coded from other
programmes. With the retirement of Philosophy staff who were central to the programme, it became
impossible to offer the required range of courses.
The College considered the possibility of discontinuing the Minor in 2013. However it seemed possible that
with a pending appointment the Minor might be resurrected at a point in the future. Entry to the Minor was
suspended and the decision on its future deferred until 2015.
Now however the department and the College believe that staffing is not sufficient to supporting the offering
of HAPS in the foreseeable future and wishes to discontinue it. There have been no student enrolments in
HAPS since 2012.
HAPS courses will be discontinued via the MCCS.

Rationale for discontinuing Theatre and Film Studies
The purpose of this proposal is to discontinue Theatre and Film Studies (TAFS) as a Major and Minor for the
BA, and as a subject for the Certificate in Arts, the Graduate Diploma in Arts, and BA (Hons).
In August 2013 the University Council voted to accept a document from the College of Arts: Change and
Renewal: A Proposal for Strategic Development and Financial Sustainability. This document proposed the
disestablishment of the Theatre and Film Studies programme as part of a package to restructure the College
of Arts. From September 2013 no new enrolments were accepted into any Theatre and Film Studies
programme.
Arrangements were made to ensure the teaching out of all students enrolled in majors, minors or other TAFS
programmes. Students were advised of the impending discontinuation of the programme and TAFS staff
advised undergraduate students of the courses they need to take to ensure completion of their majors and
minors. An Associate Dean, Alison Holcroft, met with Dr Greta Bond in December 2014 to ensure that all
students were on track to complete their programmes. The Department made strenuous efforts to contact
students who had been enrolled for a Major or Minor but had not enrolled in any courses for one or more
years. We are confident that all students who have enrolled for courses in 2014 and 2015 will be able to
complete their Major or Minor.
There are no students currently enrolled for the MA in Theatre and Film Studies. Of the two students enrolled
in 2013, one has completed her thesis and the other has withdrawn. However there are still students active in
the PhD programme and that will be discontinued at a later stage. The Theatre and Film Studies programme
for the Master of Arts will be retained for the time being, to provide a possible exit qualification for the PhD.
Entry into both awards will continue to be suspended. Undergraduate and Honours courses in TAFS will be
discontinued from 31/12/2015 via the MCCS.
