STATEMENT OF FAITH

The Apostles’ Creed

I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

THE PEACEMAKER’S PLEDGE

A Commitment to Biblical Conflict Resolution

As people reconciled to God by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we believe that we are called to respond to conflict in a way that is remarkably different from the way the world deals with conflict.

1 We also believe that conflict provides opportunities to glorify God, serve other people, and grow to be like Christ.

Therefore, in response to God's love and in reliance on his grace, we commit ourselves to respond to conflict according to the following principles:

Glorify God — Instead of focusing on our own desires or dwelling on what others may do, we will rejoice in the Lord and bring him praise by depending on his forgiveness, wisdom, power, and love, as we seek to faithfully obey his commands and maintain a loving, merciful, and forgiving attitude.

Get the Log out of Your Own Eye — Instead of blaming others for a conflict or resisting correction, we will trust in God's mercy and take responsibility for our own contribution to conflicts—confessing our sins to those we have wronged, asking God to help us change any attitudes and habits that lead to conflict, and seeking to repair any harm we have caused.

Gently Restore — Instead of pretending that conflict doesn't exist or talking about others behind their backs, we will overlook minor offenses or we will talk personally and graciously with those whose offenses seem too serious to overlook, seeking to restore them rather than condemn them. When a conflict with a Christian brother or sister cannot be resolved in private, we will ask others in the body of Christ to help us settle the matter in a biblical manner.

Go and be reconciled — Instead of accepting premature compromise or allowing relationships to wither, we will actively pursue genuine peace and reconciliation—forgiving others as God, for Christ's sake, has forgiven us, and seeking just and mutually beneficial solutions to our differences.

By God's grace, we will apply these principles as a matter of stewardship, realizing that conflict is an assignment, not an accident. We will remember that success in God's eyes is not a matter of specific results, but of faithful, dependent obedience. And we will pray that our service as peacemakers will bring praise to our Lord and lead others to know His infinite love.

Student Responsibility Agreement

I agree, with God’s help, to do the following:

 Help club maintain positive, friendly, Christ-honoring environment that will enable all members to learn and grow

 Participate fully in Gavel Club and breakout rooms

 Be punctual

Attend all club meetings

Follow Peacemaker’s Pledge

 Maintain high ethical standards in all C4 activities

 Adhere to dress code set by Capital Baptist Co-op during club

 Dress in proper tournament attire set by STOA

 Provide helpful, constructive criticism to all members

Prepare for competition to the best of my ability

Complete all club assignments

Obtain coach approval of competition material

Compete in the Capital Baptist speech tournament

Parental Responsibility Agreement

I agree, with God’s help, to do the following:

 Purchase needed books

 Provide computer access for research

 Affiliate with STOA speech and debate league

 Be my child’s primary coach

Recruit judges for tournaments

Supply at least one judge to tournaments at which your child is competing

 Do one tournament job for the Capital Baptist speech tournament

 Serve as needed for debate tournaments

 Attend all parent meetings from 1:00-2:00 during speech weeks

 Help coach in the break out rooms during speech weeks from 2:15-3:30

 Follow Peacemaker’s Pledge

 Authorize emergency medical treatment for my child

What We Offer

Speech

($15/student per year + $30/student for curriculum). Returning students that already own the Toastmasters manuals do not need to purchase new curriculum :

 Speech club meets bi-weekly on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons (these are separate clubs and families will sign up for either the Tuesday OR Thursday club).

 Open to students ages 12-18 by Jan 1, 2016.

 The first hour of speech club is run as a Toastmasters Gavel Club.

 The second hour of speech club will consist of workshops designed to help students

 prepare competition speeches as well as progress through the Toastmasters curriculum.

All speech students will be expected to purchase the Toastmasters curriculum at a cost of

$15/student. Returning C4 students that already own the Toastmasters curriculum do not

 need to purchase new curriculum.

Speech club offers Toastmasters public speaking certifications as well as training in 12 competitive speech events in four broad categories: o Platform o Interpretive o Limited Preparation o Wild Card

 Extemp is a limited prep speech based on current events. Extemp club meets on

Tuesday evenings for both Tuesday and Thursday clubs.

 Mars Hill Impromptu and Apologetics are limited prep events that will be practiced during breakout rooms but all preparation must be done at home

Debate

C4 offers three types of debate coaching for competition in the STOA league.

Lincoln-Douglas (LD) Debate ($15/student) :

 LD Debate meets bi-weekly on Thursday only

Open to students ages 12-18 by January 1, 2016

Instead of a parent coach, LD Debate will be coached this year by Mrs. Joanna

Walters, a nationally ranked high school and college debater who has agreed to help us build our LD program. Because she is not a parent coach, LD students will pay

$150/student coaching fee to pay for her services.

 LD debate is debated between individual students who argue a value proposition.

The Stoa league will be debating two resolutions this year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Both resolutions will be debated at the national championships

Stoa Resolution #1 (Oct-Jan): Resolved: In formal education liberal arts ought to be valued above practical skills.

Stoa Resolution #2 (Feb-Apr): Resolved: Developing countries ought to prioritize economic growth over environmental protection.

Parliamentary (Parli) Debate ($15/student + $25/student coaching fee) :

 Parli debate meets weekly on Tuesday evenings for all C4 students competing in this event.

 Open to students ages 16-18 by January 1, 2016 or students currently in high school with at least one year of LD or TP debate experience.

 Parli debate students compete in teams of two, and the resolution changes every round.

 If an alumni coach is hired, there may be an additional coaches' fee assessed.

Team Policy (TP) Debate ($15/student + $20/student curriculum fee) :

 TP Debate meets bi-weekly on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons (these are separate clubs and families will sign up for either the Tuesday OR Thursday club)

 TP Debate may also meet 1-2 times a month on Saturdays for extended practice and

 coaching. Attendance at these debate labs is encouraged, but not mandatory.

Open to students ages 12-18 by Jan 1, 2016.

 Students are required to purchase a debate source book for $20 to participate in club.

TP debate students compete in teams of two, and they propose and argue against specific policy changes. The 2015-2016 resolution is:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reform its trade policy with one or more of the following nations: China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan.

Mock Trial/Moot Court: (pay as you go, open to both clubs)

Mock Trial and Moot Court are open on an audition basis to upperclassmen.

In Mock Trial, a team of 6-8 students present a trial and perform as either lawyers or witnesses.

Mock Trial auditions have already been held for the 2014-15 season.

In Moot Court, students argue (either singly or in teams of two) as appellate lawyers as to the constitutionality of an existing court decision. Multiple universities, state, and national organizations host competitions throughout the year. A Moot Court informational meeting will be held after debate club on Thursday, Sept 18 th .

Junior Track Program

($10/student per year for Jr Speech OR Jr Debate; $20/student per year if Jr Speech AND

Jr Debate)

The Junior Track Program meets weekly (Tuesday and Thursday clubs) and is open to students ages 7-11. There is a separate program on speech and debate weeks so that students may participate in one or both groups. Students will participate in a variety of fun public speaking and critical thinking activities, as well as have the opportunity for free play.
