Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
“SEEING IS BELIEVING”
Turn that saying around and you get “Believing is
seeing.” Faith is the gift of looking right through and beyond
what is obvious. Believing is seeing what lies beyond sight.
Isaiah had faith. He saw right through and beyond the
“forsaken” and “desolate” circumstances of the people. Isaiah
saw through to the faithfulness and love of God—and dared to
proclaim it.
Saint Paul had faith. Faced with ordinary people
struggling with ordinary jealousies and divisions, he told them
(and tells us) to look beyond the obvious. One person heals,
another works wonders, another preaches. People have
different functions. But so what? Behind the different gifts is
“one and the same Spirit [who] produces all these” gifts (1
Corinthians 12:11).
Jesus’ disciples were developing faith. Through the
“signs” of this ordinary-seeming man who went with his
mother to a wedding reception, they began to see beyond the
visible, to discern divinity at work in him.
IT TAKES PRACTICE
Like the disciples, we are developing faith. We are
discovering that there is a world beyond the world at the tip of our noses. Call it the world of the Spirit; call it the
supernatural; call it what you will. But behind what is obvious lies a divine presence, a hidden reality.
And yet not completely hidden. With faith, we glimpse the hand of God at work, especially in our own lives. But
if not looked for, that divine hand surely will remain unseen. When we try to see how everything works for our good, we
begin to see the signs of divine love gently moving us. The excitement of a new job or the possibilities opened up by
losing a job; warm sunshine or cold rain; winning or losing—it’s a matter of opening up our eyes to the benefits of
everything.
Not always easy, of course. But it certainly doesn’t take a saint. It takes practice. We must look at our lives and
see beyond the obvious. We must practice looking for the miracle, the sign, the presence of the Spirit.
Today’s Readings: Isaiah 62:1–5; Psalm 96:1–3, 7–10; 1 Corinthians 12:4–11; John 2:1–11

Pastor’s Corner
Dear Parishioners,
“Proclaim His marvelous deeds to all the nations.” What
‘marvelous’ deeds has God done for you? How often have you
shared God’s involvement in your everyday lives with those
with whom you associate? Often times we probably don’t even
consider it ourselves and surely not important enough to share.
But you and I are supposed to do just that! How else is the
good news of God’s love going to be revealed? This week let
that be our challenge, to look for and see what God is doing in
our lives.
We are working on our Lenten Schedule of services for the
upcoming season that is just around the corner. Last year we
participated in the “Light is on for You” program with Mass
followed by adoration of the Holy Eucharist as well as the
opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the
Wednesdays of Lent at St. Michael’s and on Thursdays at St.
Francis Xavier. I plan to do the same again this year even
though not many took advantage of this opportunity. Many
give up things as a Lenten penance, maybe we could give up
some precious time to put ourselves in His presence, a presence
we hope to spend eternity in! Why wait when we can be
graced here and now?!
I am also attempting to work out a Mass schedule for the
weekdays of Lent that might be more conducive for each of us
to participate. Let’s make this Lenten season something
special, a time when we really prepare our souls for the great
Feast of our Salvation.
God Bless you in all you do,
St. Francis

The Core Teams at St. Michael oversaw
the parish evaluations of the Criteria for
Evangelization, Catechesis and Catholic
Schools and found that their strengths
included: The parish is a welcoming
parish, weekly religious education for
youth and adult bible study is offered and
that Catholic Education is encouraged and
supported. Our hopes for the future
include: To increase parental involvement in
the youth’s continued religious education,
to obtain someone (hire/volunteer) to
support our youth and youth activities
offered through the New Albany Deanery.
To promote more adult & young adult
programs that already exist throughout
the deanery and encourage our
parishioners to take advantage of these
programs.
Next week we will talk about Stewardship
and how you as a parish rate how the
parish might improve our Stewardship.
Your opinion does matter and will help the
core team as part of the planning and
hopes for the future of our parishes.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote
ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its
aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and
understanding. This time is called Ordinary Time
Theme: Grace is God’s free gift to us.
Step 1: What image lingers for you from this reading?
Step two: Look into your Life.
Children: What is one special gift that God has given
to you to share with your friends or classmates?
Youth: Jesus got his start in ministry through the
urging of his mother. Who urges you to pray, go to
Church, and do good works?
Adults: God fills each of us with grace (miracles) and
gifts, what is one grace (miracle) or gift that you have
shared with your family?
