The Baptism of the Lord
GOD MADE MANIFEST
An epiphany is a manifestation of God in visible form.
Today’s scriptures are replete with references to ways that God
was made manifest. Isaiah sees “the glory of the LORD …
revealed” in the visible form of God renewing the covenant by
bringing the Israelites home from exile. Psalm 104 presents
God’s “manifold works,” singing: “When you send forth your
spirit … you renew the face of the earth” (Psalm 104:30). The
reading from Titus takes up this theme of renewal as a
manifestation of God. It mentions three “appearances” of
God—in the person of Jesus, in glory in the fullness of time,
and in our baptismal “renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Finally, God
was made manifest in Jesus’ baptism when “the Holy Spirit
descended upon him in bodily form like a dove and a voice
came from heaven” (Luke 3:22).
BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE
What do all these epiphanies have to do with us? Titus
assures us that the same Spirit of God who renews the universe,
renewed the covenant, and descended upon Jesus has been
“richly poured out on us” in “the bath of rebirth.” With Jesus,
we have been baptized “with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Those of us who were baptized as infants may not remember our baptism; even less might we remember our
experience of God made manifest in us that day. Yet every time our community prays the Eucharistic Prayer and shares in
Holy Communion the Spirit descends upon us again, pouring out the divine life that renews and “fires” us. As we move
into Ordinary Time we will hear how the Spirit propelled Jesus forth to proclaim the Good News. Through our sharing in
the Holy Spirit in baptism and Eucharist we, too, are propelled forth to make Christ manifest in the world.
God is manifested in visible form today by the renewal and the “fire” of all the baptized.
Today’s Readings: Isaiah 40:1–5, 9–11; Psalm 104:1b–4, 24–25, 27–30; Titus 2:11–14; 3:4–7; Luke 3:15–16, 21–22

Pastor’s Corner
Dear Parishioners,
Are you ready for Lent!!!! No I'm not
kidding, Ash Wednesday is February 10 not
too far off. We don't really get too much of
a break this year. I just wanted to get you
in the mood!
During this Jubilee of Mercy we are
encouraged to be more open to this great
gift offered so freely by our God through
His Church. The sacraments are sure signs of
this mercy for they bring us more intimately
into communion with the Lord Jesus. Every
time we celebrate the Mass we partake in the
great event of Mercy, the suffering, death
and resurrection of The Lord. In His life,
given for each one of us, we are made worthy
to be called God's daughters and sons and
heirs with Christ to the gift of eternal
life in the Heavenly Kingdom. During the
upcoming weeks there will be many
opportunities to live joyfully the gift of
His Mercy and to grow more into an
expression of this Mercy extended to others.
Glory to Our God,
Fr. Tully

The Core Teams at St. Michael and St.
Francis oversaw the parish evaluations of
the Criteria for Sacramental Life of the
Parish and found that their strengths
included a good Sunday liturgy and
sacramental Life and that our parish is a
welcoming parish that reaches out to the
community. Our hopes for the future
include encouraging more vibrate
participation in music ministry, to improve
communication of sacramental life events
that we offer, and to encourage
participation by scheduling quarterly
training opportunities for our sacramental
ministry.
For the next few weeks we will make these
announcements for each of the 5 areas
highlighted on the survey.
So we are still asking if you have not
turned in your survey please help us by
voicing your opinion. Your opinion does
matter and will help the core team as part
of the planning and hopes for the future
of our parishes.
God of power and mercy, open our hearts
to receive anew the presence of Jesus,
our brother and savior. Prepare us to be
able to say “I am here to do your will.”
Give us the energy to focus on the “heart
of the matter”—the reception of Jesus,
the Christ into our lives with new vitality.
Right to Life
Each year Right to Life of Southern Indiana remembers
the anniversary of ‘Roe v. Wade’ by sponsoring a fullpage ad in our local newspaper.
For the next two weekends you will have an opportunity
to express your opposition to the killing of innocent
children. By donating $5, your name will be listed on a
full page advertisement in the News and Tribune
published on January 22nd. The forms will be in the
pews at St. Francis and Jerrylyn Dean will be in the lobby
of church at St. Michael.
