Reminders
The last day to turn in
February book reports is
Friday, February 28th.
Please remember in first
grade we require 5 book
reports a month.
When working on homework,
please guide your student by
reading directions;
redirecting and helping them
talk through their thinking.
Guide your child, but please
have them write their own
answers on their homework and
book reports. This is good
practice and helps them
become more independent. If you
have any questions please let
me know.
Friday Folders are sent home
EVERY Friday. Please return
them by the following
THURSDAY.
Please practice spelling
words and writing the
sentences nightly. We have
Questions,
Comments,
spelling
tests
every Friday.

I am going to be absent the week of March 3rd-7th. Each
elementary school in the district is sending three staff
members to be trained in the area of math. Our job is to
come back to our staff and lead professional development
sessions that further teachers’ math understanding.
Mrs. Galloway will be my substitute teacher
all week. Mrs. Galloway has subbed in my
classroom several times so she knows my
students very well.
I have left careful
plans for each day in order to ensure that
the learning continues in my absence. I am confident that
she and my firsties will have a happy, productive week
together. If you have any questions or concerns while I am

Our brains have been super busy! Here’s a glance into
our learning.
Pathways/Spelling:
We are learning about word families
in spelling. Word families are a group of words that all end
in the same spelling and sound (cat, hat, bat, etc.). We are
also learning about syllables. A syllable is a word part
that contains a vowel sound. We are learning about single
syllable and multi-syllable words. Remember, our spelling
words and sentences for each week come home on Mondays,
please practice the words and sentences nightly.
Reading: In reading we are learning about who the narrator
is in a story. We have been reading fictional texts that are
told is first person and third person. When a text is
written in first person a character in the story is telling
the story. First person texts use pronouns such as I and we.
A text that is written in third person is told by an outside
observer who is not a part of the story.
Writing: In writing we are continuing to learn about
opinion writing. We are discussing and practicing forming our
own opinions and backing up our opinions with reason. We have
been using the internet to research pet types. We are
currently learning how to take our notes and use the
information to write an opinion piece about which pet is the
best.
Math: We have been working hard to add and subtract with
