iCRAG PhD studentship RM3.1 PhD1 Prediction of response (and solutions) in lowland karst areas prone to flooding A PhD student is sought for a 4 year study into the response of lowland karst areas in Ireland in relation to a changing climate. The research objectives are: Differentiate between diffuse and conduit flow pathways into a karst network using isotopic and trace element water quality source separation techniques; Develop models of a lowland karst network receiving groundwater from both autogenic and allogenic sources; Use the models to simulate future climate change scenarios; This project builds on previous research on modelling karst aquifers in Ireland, which to date has focussed more on the conduit flow pathways in developed karst networks. This new research will place particular emphasis on the separating out and understanding the hydrological characteristics of the more diffuse recharge through such lowland karst aquifers. An outstanding student with interests in hydrogeology and geochemistry is required. Applicants should have a strong motivation for research and be able to demonstrate ability in numerical modelling. Applicants should possess a first class honours degree in Earth Science or Engineering. A Masters level qualification in Hydrogeology would also be desirable. The researcher will be based within the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin. The PhD studentship covers academic fees (EU level) and subsistence of €16,500 per annum. The studentship should start in September 2015. The project is funded under the iCRAG programme: iCRAG is funded under the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centres Programme and is co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund. Interested candidates should send a 3-page CV, names of two academic referees and a covering letter explaining their interest in this research topic, to the contact address below. The closing date for applications is Friday 17th April 2015.
