Mrs. Kay Smidt’s Lesson Plans January 13-17, 2013 7th grade English: Monday-Mrs. Kourdi will hand out and read over spelling list #16 with the students. I will then briefly discuss with students the poems on pp 568-571 with the students. Mrs. Kourdi will then introduce to students the four sentence types (p 573) and have students complete additional materials over these sentence types. Tuesday -Mrs. Kourdi will administer spelling pretest # 16. I will have students follow along as I explain to them the Writing Workshop (an online feature article) on pp 620627 and then show students some examples of the online feature articles about poems that the students wrote last year. Wednesday -Mrs. Kourdi will finish her lesson over sentence types. I will then hand out to students the pre-writing materials that they will need for the Writing Workshop, giving them a timeline that they will need to follow after I have talked with Mrs. Knodel about her plans for discussing the poems in reading class. Thursday-Mrs. Kourdi will administer spelling test # 1 and may explain and assign the Writing for Assessment on p 619, a lesson on analyzing how writers use figurative language to create mood. Students will be given time in class to work on this assignment and their Writing Workshop assignment. Mrs. Kourdi and I will create our class lists for Lan School. Friday- Students will be given time in class to work on their Writing for Assessment and their Writing Workshop assignments. English IV: Monday -Students will continue listening to/reading/discussing Macbeth, Act I, Scenes 5 - 7. I will give them a review sheet for a quiz over Act I that they will take tomorrow. Tuesday -Act I quiz. I will hand out the study guide for Act II and will play the cd of Scene 1. Wednesday- I will hand back the Act I quizzes. Students will continue with Macbeth, Act II, Scenes 3-4 and review for a quiz over Act II. Thursday -Students will take a quiz over Act II. I will then hand out the study guide for Act III and will play the cd of Scene 1. Friday- I will hand back the Act II quizzes. Students will continue with Macbeth, Act III, Scenes 2 - 4. English III: Monday -I will lead a discussion to the answers over the questions from "The Autobiography of Mark Twain." Mrs. Kourdi will then cover with students the vocabulary in context lesson and the text analysis lesson on voice in conjunction with this selection (pp 672-673). If/when Mrs. Knodel has covered the poems "the lesson of the moth" and "identity" with the students, I will assign the writing prompt on p 623. Tuesday- Mrs. Kourdi will administer spelling pretest #15. I will give the students a quiz over using commas correctly. Wednesday - I will have students follow along as I explain to them the Writing Workshop materials on pp 668- 675 , which are the creation of an online feature article on a topic of their choice (which must be approved by me) and then show students some examples of the online feature articles that the juniors created for their first semester projects. Thursday - Mrs. Kourdi will administer spelling test # 15. I will hand out to students the pre-writing materials that they will need for the Writing Workshop, giving them a timeline that they will need to follow. Mrs. Kourdi will explain and assign the Writing for Assessment on p. 631, a lesson on comparing literary selections that differ in some way but share a recurring theme. Friday- A sub (and Mrs. Kourdi?) will cover while I am over in the gym preparing for the one act play performance 8th period. Students will be given time in class to work on their Writing Workshop and Writing for Assessment assignments. I will tell students that Mrs. Kourdi and I will create our class list for LanSchool with them next Monday. English I: Monday – I will play the cd of Michael Fox’s testimony before the Senate and then have students discuss the answers to the questions on p 677 over this selection. I will then introduce to students the lesson on tone on p 679 and have them complete the writing prompt on p 679, a three to five paragraph memo from one senator to another, reacting to Fox’ s testimony. I will remind them to use imperative sentences. Tuesday –I will have some of the students read their memo to the class and we will critique them. I will then play the cd of the paired texts on pp 680- 690 about privacy and assign questions 1 – 9 on p. 691. Wednesday – We will discuss the answers to the questions assigned yesterday and the question, “What steps do you take to ensure your privacy?” Mrs. Kourdi will then cover with students the lesson on rhetorical devices on p. 693. Thursday-I will introduce students to the Writing Workshop (a persuasive essay) on pp 712 - 720 and hand out the Writing Workshop worksheets. I will tell students that they will need to have their topics decided on by Monday and have the prewriting worksheet(s) completed for class on Monday. I will tell them that they will be given time in class on Monday to work on their essays while Mrs. Kourdi and I create our class list for LanSchool. Friday-No class due to one act play performance.
