the classroom.
***EVALUATION DEVICES: Instructor Critique, Class Critique, Self Evaluation,
one open book quiz, three gallery reviews. Critiques are discussions of painting
assignments. Major critiques are scheduled on the class calendar. Short
critiques will happen on a daily basis. Gallery reviews are short written
responses to art that we view.
ATTENDANCE and GRADING: In this class you are not graded on your talent,
but on your effort. To that end, attendance and homework due dates are
extremely important. You will be allowed two absences and beyond those you
will lose points. If an extreme illness causes you to miss class, please discuss
that with me. A specific number of points will be awarded for each class session,
each project and each homework assignment. If you are late to class you will
lose 5 points. Class ends when the instructor dismisses class. Leaving early
without permission will cause you to lose 5 points.
***ASSIGNMENTS: : You will complete a minimum of four 16 x 20 acrylic
paintings or larger. 16 x 20 canvas boards will be provided. There will be daily
quick painting studies done as well.
Two of the 16 x 20 will be still life studies based on observation of objects in the
classroom. One painting will be of your favorite view of Walla Walla, to be
displayed at the WWCC Drama Department production of “Our Town” which is
performed at The China Pavilion March 5th---8th. One painting will be based on
the theme of “Seasons” which will be displayed at the WWCC Music Department
Operetta which will be performed in The China Pavilion during finals week.
You will be introduced to a variety of painting styles. You are encouraged to
paint in your own style.
You may choose to do a painting on the theme of Civil Rights for our Martin
Luther King/ Civil Rights exhibit on January 20th.
By the time you read this, I will already have many other ideas for projects! Be
prepared to do a lot of painting!
ARTIST SKETCHBOOK: You will use your sketchbook as a place to take notes
on artists discussed in class, sketch your compositions and gather ideas. You will
bring your sketchbook to class daily.
ETIQUETTE and CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: I believe a good learning
environment is a balance between freedom and discipline. I like to have a
relaxed atmosphere so that students feel free to express themselves artistically,
but there needs to be enough discipline in order to maintain respect for the
teacher and the other students. That said, if I am talking or lecturing you need to
be listening. If we are having a group discussion, you need to listen to each
other. If people are talking out of turn, I will stop and pause until focus is
restored. If disruptions persist, the students involved will be dismissed for the
day and dropped from the class.
When I am not lecturing or presenting material, you are allowed to talk to each
other while working. You are allowed to listen to your own music, but you must
use headphones.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURE: Each class will begin with attendance and a
chance to share with each other any art information we have discovered outside
of class. I will present images, websites and video clips at this time that are
relevant to our projects. The bulk of our class is devoted to working on painting
projects, but we will take breaks for quick critiques and conversation.
CLEAN UP: The last ten minutes of each class is reserved for clean up. Each
student is expected to participate. Failure to do so will affect your grade. This
includes: emptying paint water is designated containers; putting away supplies
your borrowed from the room; putting away your own supplies in your locker;
washing off your table; cleaning up any paint spilled on the floor.
