Believe Study Guide Chapter 21: Love Personal Study As we start the third and final section of Believe, we shift our attention from spiritual practices and love to Christ-like virtues. Before your group meeting, read Believe, Chapter 21: Love. Then ask yourself how this virtue manifests itself in your life. Memorizing Scripture is a valuable discipline for all believers to exercise. Spend a few minutes each day committing this week’s Key Verses to memory. Key Verse: This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since god so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. – 1 John 4:10-12 Key Idea: God has called us to be people of love. Read - Note any verses or insights God gives you as you spend time with Him this week. The more you reflect on God’s word and spend time with Him, the more it will impact your life! Discuss - LifeGroup Meeting Welcome! Welcome to Session 21 of Believe. If there are any new members in your group, take a moment to introduce yourselves to each other before watching the video. Then, feel free to get started! Getting Started Begin your discussion by reciting the Key Verses and Key Idea together as a group. On your first attempt, use your notes if you need help. On your second attempt, try to state them completely from memory. What have you learned or what insight has God given you this week as you’ve spent time with Him through your daily Bible reading, Believe reading and in prayer this week? What was the most impactful thing you heard from Pastor Chuck in this weekend’s message? 2. Which of the 5 principles of love that Pastor Chuck shared this weekend is the most challenging for you? Why? What is one thing you can do to get better in this area? In what ways do you think your love would grow if you got better in this area? How can your group help? 3. Think of a difficult relationship you are struggling with. What ‘phase’ (Avoidance, Mistrust, Contempt, Death) is the relationship in? What do you think God is calling you to do to move toward resurrecting and restoring the relationship? Read 1 John 3:13-22. How might you have to make yourself vulnerable in order to show love? Are you willing to do it? Why or why not? Love Like Jesus Define what forgiveness means to you. What do Ephesians 4:32 and Hebrews 12:14 have to say about forgiveness? Read John 21:15-17. Have you ever been betrayed or hurt by someone that you really loved? Have you been able to forgive them as Jesus forgave Peter? Why or why not? Intentional Intimacy Read 1 Peter 4:8-9 and Ephesians 4:15. How do you think our love for others affects our intimacy with God? What does 1 Peter 3:1-7 show us about this connection? Fully Surrendered Compare and contrast how 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 describes your relationships in each of these areas: family, friends, co-workers? Do you think there should there be any difference in how you relate to people in different areas of your life? Why or why not? Do you need to take one of these steps with someone in your life? Closing Prayer Close your time together with prayer. Share your prayer requests with one another. Ask God to help you put this week’s Key Idea into practice.
