RESEARCH ASSISTANT – CENTRE FOR CHROMOSOME BIOLOGY SCHOOL OF NATURAL SCIENCES Ref. No. NUIG 59-13 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Research Assistant with the Centre for Chromosome Biology at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by SFI-HRB-Wellcome Trust and is available from September 2013 to contract end date of May 2018. The Dunleavy Laboratory studies fundamental cellular processes required for the correct transmission of genetic material during cell division cycles. Specifically, we focus on the regulation of centromeres, key regions of eukaryotic chromosomes where kinetochores assemble to ensure proper chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis. We use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model developmental system to investigate centromere function and regulation during meiosis and gametogenesis. For more information on the Dunleavy Laboratory see: http://www.chromosome.ie/researchers/dunleavy/ Job Description: The successful candidate will perform the following experimental techniques: molecular biology and cloning, protein purification, immuno-precipitation, immuno-fluorescent microscopy and live imaging. An important responsibility will be to carry out general animal husbandry, including preparation of fly food and manipulation of fly stocks. The candidate will oversee general laboratory organisation including ordering and monitoring of laboratory supplies. Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have an excellent track record in a research and development environment. Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science (2.1 or higher). A Research Masters or equivalent post-graduate experience is desired, but not required. The ideal candidate would have experience in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, developmental biology and genetics. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills and be able to work as a team. This position is intended for a research-driven individual with a strong desire to learn and accomplish, with the possibility to complete a part-time PhD in the laboratory if desired.
