Winterlights: Christmas in Luxemburg
From the 23rd November until the 31st December, a wave of ginger bread, pancakes and donuts
engulfs Luxembourg. Together with light installations, concerts, a Santa Claus parade, fireworks,
attractions for children and of course the Christmas markets, they create a unique atmosphere.
Cultural activities take place day and night.

The Winterlights festival plunges Luxembourg’s historic city centre into a fairy-tale atmosphere.
Located on different squares around the capital, the Christmas markets are not to be missed. Ferris
wheel, merry-go-round, advent circus, street animations, parades and exhibitions highlight
Luxembourg’s lively character, both day and night. Arts and crafts, silver and tin jewellery, ceramics,
Christmas decorations, crystal ware, hand painted porcelain and decorative lamps are part of the offer.
Christmas time means indulging and Luxembourg’s regional produce is a great excuse. Try the culinary
specialities made with local spices, vinegars, oils, jams, dried fruits, wine or liquors.
A stroll through the streets of Luxembourg’s old town, which is part of UNESCO world heritage, is a
great way to get into shopping mood. Luxury boutiques or exquisite shops tempt with an array of
objects. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, shops are open on Sundays and longer opening
hours in the evening make for a great shopping experience. The hunt for the last gift shouldn’t be a
challenge. The capital boasts of an array of brands in the heart of the city centre.
Around Christmas time, the cultural offer in Luxembourg is rich and varied. Throughout the day you
can explore museums and galleries. The national Museum of History and Art (MNHA) shows the
exhibition “Mummies - The dream of everlasting life”, the biggest exhibition on mummies of all times.
This death-cult also has its origins in Asia, America and the Pacific. Mudam in Kirchberg displays the
exhibition “Eppur si muove”, which explores the interconnection between technology and fine arts.
With “The Borders of Independence- Luxembourg between 1815 and 1839”, the Musée 3 Éechelen
remembers the congress of Vienna, which rearranged Europe exactly 200 years ago. Similar to
scientific research, the exhibition shows how the Grand Duchy’s borders were established and how the
population experienced this era until the independence in 1839. The art museum Villa Vauban shows
important art works, which up until now have rarely been displayed.
During December and leading up Christmas, evenings are enchanting: those interested in classical
music will enjoy the Christmas concert in the historic setting of a church. Those who are drawn to
contemporary dance can experience Pina Bausch’s ballet company. Between the 2nd and 5th December
they perform the piece “Masurca Fog”. Between the 16th and 31st December, “Mamma Mia!” is the
perfect choice for those interested in the success story of the band ABBA (Grand Théâtre). The advent
circus is a great option for families, with acrobats, clowns and animal tamers (on the Glacis, allée
Scheffer).
Those who have a passion for good food will feel right at home in Luxembourg. The country has the
highest density of star restaurants in the world. Modern and surprising menus are a great way to
discover the country. Night owls can party the night away; only recently 17 nightlife awards have been
awarded to best clubs and bars.
Together with a guide, an array of Christmas market tours take place throughout the capital on the
19th December. Keep an eye out for exciting package deals from Luxembourg’s hotels. Many hotels
also have great wellness offers, perfect for winter.
