Miami University Archives Jacky Johnson, Interim University Archivist, 513-529-2069, johnsoj@miamioh.edu Location ● The Archives are located in Withrow Hall in the old Withrow Court locker area, directly across from the McKie baseball field. The entrance is on the North side, through the parking lot. There is no entrance directly from within Withrow Hall. Hours ● The Archives are open 8:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday. They are closed on holidays when other university offices are closed. Patrons are urged to phone ahead whenever possible (513-529-6720). Services ● Electronic and print indexes to the collection are available for patron use. Staff will also assist with copying or special requirements, Collections ● The Miami University Archives is part of the University Libraries Special Collections Department. In addition to serving as the University Records Repository, the Archives contains manuscripts, publications, photographs, and artifacts dealing with Miami University and Oxford history. The Archives also houses many of the surviving records and publications of Oxford Female College, the first U.S. Protestant school to confer the Bachelor of Arts upon women and the Western College for Women, the first daughter institution of Mount Holyoke College, which opened in 1855 as Western Female Seminary. The Archives’ major collections include the following. Miami University Administrative and Governmental Records ● Miami University Presidents’ papers and reports (1824- ); minutes of the Board of trustees (1809- ); records and reports of university legislative bodies, administrators, special commissions, and task forces. University and Student Publications ● University catalogs and directories (1826- ) ; Miami Bulletin, Alumnus, Alumni newsletter, and Miamian (magazine) (1903- ) ; Recensio (1868-71, 1894- ) ; Commencement programs (1827- ); Benton Bulletin, President’s Newsletter, Miamian (newspaper), Miami University Report (1940- ) ; Miami Student (1867- ) and other student newspapers and newsletters. The Archives also maintains a partial computer index to The Student and other selected publications. Materials from University Departments ● Audio-visual department tapes and films of campus events and personalities; Department of Public Information / News Bureau news releases (1951- ); annual reports of University divisions, departments, and offices. Faculty, Students, and Alumni ● Manuscripts and minutes of selected student organizations; and materials dealing with individual faculty, students and alumni, including manuscripts, biographical information, scrapbooks, photographs, and publications. Photographs, Artifacts, and Special Collections ● The Frank R. Snyder and George Hoxie Photograph collections, dealing with Miami University and Oxford history (1897 – 1984); assorted photographs and slides from the Department of Public Information / News Bureau, Audio-Visual Department, and the Miami Student (1950 - ); artifacts and memorabilia related to Miami history; Miami University Oral History collection; Miami Valley Cultural Heritage Project, consisting of taped interviews concerning Miami Valley history and culture; and information on past and current university buildings. Oxford Female College ● Faculty Meeting Minutes (1900-1927); Student Government Committee Minutes (1905-1906, 1918-1928); financial ledgers (1851-1928); college catalogs (1839-1928); assorted pamphlets, brochures and scrapbooks; newspapers – Oxford Collegian / Oxford Spirit (1888-1928); yearbooks – Oxonian (1916-17, 1921, 1926); and photographs, manuscripts and memorabilia pertaining to individual alumni and faculty. Western College Memorial Archives The collection includes Boards of Trustees records dating back to 1853, original materials from Western College presidents, administrative records, policies, catalogs, biographical information manuscripts and memorabilia pertaining to individual faculty and alumnae, audio and video media and an impressive photographic collection.
