Year 3- What makes the Earth angry? LC5:Who experiences extreme weather in our country? WOW: Introduction to topic: 1) Chn will be shown a range of clips from tsunamis; volcanoes and hurricanes. We will discuss each clip/ image and share our ideas as a class. 2) Chn will be presented with a letter from the Discovery channel boss David Zaslav. This letter will briefly explain their assignment is to create a documentary about ‘What makes the Earth angry’ for younger children. 3) Chn will be given the opportunity to use Ipads to research extreme weather and present them to their peers. 4) Chn will create the layers of the earth using plasticine and explore how the Earth was formed. LC1: What causes a volcano to erupt and which are the famous volcanoes in the world? 1) Chn will explore the cross-section of a volcano in order to explore what causes a volcano to erupt. 2) Chn will use co-ordinates to place volcanoes on a map of the world. LC2: How do volcanoes impact on the lives of people and why do people choose to live near them? 1) Chn will explore the impact of a volcanic eruption and create news presentations in small groups. 2) Chn will write a non-chronological report describing the impact of Mount Vesuvius. LC4: What causes an earthquake (and a tsunami) and how are they measured? 1) Chn will watch clips of the Kobe earthquake and explore the impact it had. 2) Chn will discover how earthquakes are measured and read Richter scales. 3) Chn will watch clips of tsunamis and discuss the causes and their destructive nature. 4) Chn will watch clips and discuss the impact of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. 5) Chn will explore how they would feel in a tsunami and how this may affect them. 1) 2) 3) We will discuss what we consider extreme weather in the UK and recall any we have personally experienced and how this impacted our life. Chn will use Ipads to research extreme weather in the UK and its impact on our country. Chn will explore survival kits/ and instructional posters and create our own earthquake survival kit with accompanying posters and/or leaflets. LC3: How can we recreate an erupting volcano? 1) Chn will sketch a plan of their erupting volcanoes and explore appropriate materials to use. 2) Chn will plan and write instructions in order to create their erupting volcano. 3) Chn will create and evaluate their model volcano. LC6: Which countries have experienced earthquakes and tsunamis in your lifetime? 1) Chn will use Ipads to research countries that have experienced earthquakes and tsunamis in their lifetime. 2) Chn will create a poster for an earthquake or tsunami from their lifetime and present these to their peers. 3) The whole class will then create a timeline of tsunamis and earthquakes during their lifetime. LC8: Reflection Chn will work in groups to put together a documentary of extreme weather using music, drama, images and video clips. LC7: How can we capture a stormy weather pattern using music, drama and dance? 1) Chn will listen to weather inspired music and discuss how they interpret it. 2) Chn will work in groups to compose their own weather inspired music. 3) Chn will watch and evaluate weather inspired contemporary dancing. 4) Chn will work in group to capture their own stormy weather inspired dance.
