Unpacked Standard: Second grade students should be able to express their opinion and demonstrate the ability to share their opinion and reasoning with others. In order to do so, students need multiple opportunities to express opinions (verbally and in writing) and develop reasoning to support their thinking. What students need to know: Write sentences to introduce an opinion product. Give reasons to support my opinion using linking words. (eg. because and also) Write an ending sentence to close an opinion. What students need to do: Form an opinion about a topic or book I have read. Write a beginning sentence to show my opinion of what I think or feel about a topic or book. Express my opinion by sharing it with others. Level 1 Entering Express their opinion and demonstrate the ability to share their opinion and reasoning with others by communicating through drawings (This might include a drawing of a favorite character with written or scripted reasons why) with teacher support. Level 2 Emerging Express their opinion and demonstrate the ability to share their opinion and reasoning with others providing information using graphic organizers with pictures and/or words, with teacher support. Level 3 Developing Express their opinion and demonstrate the ability to share their opinion and reasoning with others by participating in interactive journal writing with teacher support. Level 4 Expanding Express their opinion and demonstrate the ability to share their opinion and reasoning with others by composing journal entries and then read that opinion to the class or small group.
