Standard: W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book
they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion,
use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and
provide a concluding statement or section.
Unpacked Standard:
Second grade students should be able to express their opinion and demonstrate the ability to
share their opinion and reasoning with others. In order to do so, students need multiple
opportunities to express opinions (verbally and in writing) and develop reasoning to support
their thinking.
What students need to know:
 Write sentences to introduce an opinion
product.
 Give reasons to support my opinion using
linking words. (eg. because and also)
 Write an ending sentence to close an
opinion.
What students need to do:
 Form an opinion about a topic or book I
have read.
 Write a beginning sentence to show my
opinion of what I think or feel about a topic
or book.
 Express my opinion by sharing it with
others.
 Demonstrate my opinion by giving reasons
that support my thinking. (orally and/or
written)
 Use linking words. (eg. because, also) to
connect opinions and reasons.
 Write an ending sentence to close my
opinion statement.
