Curriculum Links:
This lesson has links to curriculum aims and Programmes of Study in Modern Foreign
Languages.
Learning Objectives:
Pupils will learn a range of new vocabulary and also basic facts about Cocoa farming in the
Ivory Coast.
Learning Outcomes:
Pupils will be able to recognise a range of new vocabulary and be able to understand and
describe where and how cocoa beans are grown and harvested.
Resources Needed:
KS1 Lesson 1 ppt, KS2 Lesson 1 Starter Activity, KS2 Lesson 1 cards,
KS2 Lesson 1 Wordsearch
Starter Activity:
Pupils are given a worksheet with 6 symbols that they should match up to the appropriate
English term. Check answers with the first ppt slide.
PPT: Introduce the new French vocabulary with these same symbols. Work on recognition
and pronunciation of the new vocabulary.
Pupils should then label each image in French, choosing the correct term from the box at the
bottom of the worksheet.
Using the ppt, review answers together.
Main Activity:
1. A close look at the work done by the cocoa farmers. Powerpoint presentation and
cards.
Pupils should be given a set of image-cards and English cards between two.
a) Show the images of the different stages of the cocoa production process to the
pupils.
b) In pairs, can the pupils match up the English descriptions to the different images.
c) Check answers using the ppt. Then pupils mix up cards and descriptions and do it
again as quickly as they can! (against the clock). Hands up when they are done.
d) Introduce 6 new items of vocabulary using the ppt. Work on pronunciation. Work
on recognition of terms and then see if some pupils can produce the language
independently.
e) Now pupils are given the French vocabulary cards to match up with each image and
appropriate English term.
f) Whole class: Check and discuss the answers, using the ppt.
g) Check answers. Then pupils mix up image cards, descriptions and French vocabulary
and do it again as quickly as they can! Hands up when they are done.
h) Stick matched-up cards and language in their books.
2. What else happens to the cocoa beans? Powerpoint presentation and cards.
a)
In pairs, pupils look at the four remaining photos and try and put them into the correct
order. Check the answers using the ppt.
b) Label each photo in English and in French.
c) Whole class: Look at answers together on the ppt.
Plenary: Pupils write down the meaning of the French vocabulary and then complete the wordsearch.
