FDA Milk Survey Revisited As we had mentioned in a previous newsletter, the FDA milk survey came out and showed a residue in .42% of the samples taken. The majority of the positive samples were for drugs that are not approved for lactating dairy animals. It is possible, in rare circumstances, to use these antibiotics in an Extra Label manner with the approval of a veterinarian. However, there can be NO RESIDUE (ZERO). Since these products aren't approved, the FDA considers any residue a violation. Please do not use products Extra Label unless you have thoroughly discussed the drug with your veterinarian. Some of these antibiotics found in the milk survey will take a minimum of 21 days to clear in the milk and 45 days or more to clear in the meat. The annual bulk milk screenings that are done for beta-lactams (penicillin family antibiotics) showed a positive rate of .014%. This is excellent but shows us how much work we still need to do with other antibiotics. The FDA Milk Survey violation rate was almost 30 TIMES the regular bulk tank violation rate. We know the FDA is watching this closely and in all likelihood they will be instituting additional testing of milk in the future. You can be sure that if you have a meat violation that they will be testing your bulk tank for additional antibiotics. Be smart, use antibiotics only when needed, stay on label and follow the proper withdrawal times for meat and milk. 1.0728 times the price of corn per bushel, plus .00735 times the price of soybean meal per ton, plus .0137 times the price of alfalfa hay per ton. The corn and alfalfa hay prices are those reported in the monthly NASS Agricultural Prices report. The price of soybean meal is the Central Illinois soybean meal price delivered by rail as reported in the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Market News-Monthly. The premiums will not be subsidized this time around for producers with less than 4 million pounds of production. This is what the premiums will look like: Coverage Level (Margin) per cwt. Sign Up Time Again For MPP It may seem hard to believe but it is time to sign up for the Margin Protection Program (MPP) already. The sign up begins July 1, 2015 and ends on September 30, 2015. Many of you signed up late last year, after the MPP had started because the rules had not been established in time to start on October 1, 2014. After everyone had signed up last year it was discovered that due to sequestration the payouts would be reduced 7.3%. It looks like a similar reduction due to sequestration will take place for 2016 payments however the exact reduction percentage will not be known until a payment is triggered. The calculation for the MPP is the All-Milk Price (national) minus feed costs. The average feed cost is calculated by using the sum of: Tier 1 Premium|for 2016-2018 Tier 2 Premium for 2016-2018 Covered production Covered history less than 4 production million lbs. history greater than 4 million lbs. $4.00 None None $4.50 $0.010 $0.020 $5.00 $0.025 $0.040 $5.50 $0.040 $0.100 $6.00 $0.055 $0.155 $6.50 $0.090 $0.290 $7.00 $0.217 $0.830 $7.50 $0.300 $1.060 $8.00 $0.475 $1.360 It probably makes the most sense to wait to sign up until we have a clearer picture of what prices might be doing in 2016. You will NOT automatically be re-enrolled so you must contact your FSA office to make an appointment. If you did not sign up last year you may do so this year if you qualify.
