A meeting of the City of Orlando CHAPTER 57 REVIEW BOARD was held on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2014 at City Hall, 400 South Orange Avenue, 2nd Floor Veterans Conference Room in Orlando, FL 32801. The meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. by Bassem Chaaban, Board Chair. The Board reviewed and approved the June 19, 2014 minutes; motion made by Alfreda Forshee and seconded by Ginger Malcom. The Board reviewed and approved the September 18, 2014 minutes; motion made by Alfreda Forshee and seconded by Wanda Bonet-Gascot. Record of Attendance – Board Members: Bassem Chaaban, Board Chair; Ginger Malcom, Board Vice Chair; Nathaniel Friends; Alfreda Forshee; Wanda Bonet-Gascot City of Orlando Staff: Patricia Newton, Assistant to Director/Human Relations Official; Carmen I. Feliciano, Human Relations Specialist, Board Secretary Board Members Absent: Ronald Nesbitt and Louis Preston, Jr. Discussion – Change Monthly Meeting Date After a brief discussion, the Board voted unanimously to change its meeting date to the 2nd Thursday of each month; a motion was made by Alfreda Forshee and seconded by Nathaniel Friends; therefore the Board’s next meeting will be on Thursday, November 13, 2014, at 9 a.m. Hays, Mark C. vs El Camino Village Apartments, et al – Hearing Cancelled by Complainant Patricia Newton informed the Board that the Complaint, Mark Hayes, withdrew his request for this matter to be heard before the Board. Domestic Violence Awareness Month and International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Patricia Newton informed the Board that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. She suggested that the Board consider a measure that promotes gender equality and protects against gender discrimination in all its forms, including measures aimed at identifying, eliminating and preventing gender-motivated violence. The Board unanimously agreed to ask the Mayor to issue a proclamation and a press release declaring November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in Orlando. In addition, the Board decided to explore other measures to bring awareness to gender-motivated violence. Upcoming City Events Patricia Newton reminded the Board about the Beacon Network, Inc. diversity workshop on Transgender Dynamics in the Workplace on Friday, October 24, 2014, at 9 to 11 a.m. The following Board members will attend: Ginger Malcom, Nathaniel Friends, Bassem Chaaban and Louis Preston, Jr. Other Business Bassem Chaaban, Board Chair, requested that the Board consider being more proactive in the Orlando community by adopting a three level strategic plan. He asked that the Board focus on marketing its services to governments and law enforcement; then meet with diverse communities introducing the Board and its role; and finally, bring both entities together to address the entire community. The Board made a unanimous decision to be more proactive in the community by writing articles for local publications; securing free radio air time; and building a relationship with the corporation’s diversity representative.
