Homecoming 2011 Page 1 Homecoming Court Competition 2011 Introduction Any group from any class can enter a candidate in either the Homecoming Queen or Homecoming King Competition. If a group nominates more than one candidate, all candidates nominated by that group will be disqualified. Registration opens on Monday, September 12 at 8:00AM and closes on, Wednesday, September 14 at 5:00PM. Registration can be completed at www.homecoming.mtu.edu/2011/court.html. Late entries will not be accepted! Registration must be completed online. Additionally, in order for registration to be considered complete, the nominated candidate must attend an informational meeting where their picture will be taken on Thursday, September 15, at 6:00PM in the MUB A1 Ballroom. University Marketing and Communications will be taking headshots of all candidates to be used on the Homecoming website as well as promotional and candidate publicity purposes. Electronic copies of all photographs will be available to the candidates immediately following their picture for promotional purposes. The fee for entering a candidate is $20 or for Residence Hall candidates, approved documentation with the IB number. Please write checks to Michigan Tech and send or give them to Susan Sullivan, located in 112 Memorial Union Building, Student Activities. Checks must clearly indicate the sponsoring organization. Payment must be received by 5:00PM on Thursday, September 15. All candidates will receive a t-shirt and finalists will receive a personalized sweatshirt as ambassadors of Homecoming 2011. Requirements All candidates must: Have at least 48 credit hours Be a current full-time student at Michigan Technological University Have a 3.0 cumulative GPA at Michigan Tech Be in good academic and judicial standing with Michigan Tech Be involved in one Michigan Tech registered student organization or community group Candidates who do not meet these requirements will be disqualified. Previous Homecoming Queen and King finalists are ineligible. Advertising The sponsoring group is responsible for all advertising of their candidate. Candidates will have their picture taken on September 15 at 6:00PM. Only this picture may used for publicity purposes. After the picture has been taken, you will receive an electronic copy of your image. Any other photos used will result in disqualification. Each group is required to create their own Homecoming 2011 Page 2 advertising which should contain only the approved headshot along with voting information. Teams should be aware that Michigan Tech has posting policies that should be followed. If you are unaware of these policies, please contact homecoming@mtu.edu with any questions. Voting Voting to select the top four candidates for King and the top four candidates for Queen from all nominees will take place online starting at 8:00AM Wednesday, September 21 and ending at 5:00PM Friday, September 23. All candidates will be emailed in the late afternoon hours of Friday, September 23 with results. Voting can be found on the Homecoming website at www.homecoming.mtu.edu. Obligations Candidates who make the Homecoming Court will be required to: Attend the Michigan Tech hockey game beginning at 7:07PM on Saturday, October 1. Finalists will be announced after the second period. Finalists will be required to wear their court sashes and buttons during the entirety of the week. They are also highly encouraged to participate in or appear at all Homecoming activities as possible throughout the week. Attend the Finalists Dinner on Tuesday, October 4 starting at 6:00PM in the Huskies Suite (North & South) in MacInnes Ice Arena. At this time, candidates should be prepared to address the judges with a short (2-3 minute) speech as to why they should be selected as the king or queen. They should also be prepared to answer several questions which will be asked by a moderator. Judges will score candidates based on their speech and responses to questions in relation to community involvement, personality and pose. Attire is business casual. If a letter of excuse is needed from academic courses or exams is needed, please see the Student Activities staff. Finalists will be required to participate in the homecoming parade beginning at 4:00PM on Friday, October 7. Please arrive by 3:30pm for lineup. Attire is Homecoming sweatshirts and Homecoming Sashes. Court couples are responsible for securing their own transportation, driver and identification signs for the parade. Vehicles must be in good taste or court candidates will walk the parade route. Finalists will also be asked to announce their name and sponsor during the Pep Rally, held following the Parade. Finalists must also be at the Homecoming Football Game, on Saturday, October 8 at 1:00 PM. Meet at the west entrance when ten minutes remains on the clock before half- time. Make sure you prepare properly to arrive on time and bring your Homecoming Court Sash. Attire is semi- Homecoming 2011 Page 3 formal. During halftime, the court will be introduced and the 2011 Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned. The 2011 King and Queen are invited to sit in the Lazy Boy Lookout at the 7:07PM Saturday, October 8 hockey game. Both the King and Queen will be riding on the zamboni during period intermissions. The Queen will ride between periods 1 and 2 and the King between periods 2 and 3. Please coordinate attire as a couple w/sashes. Additionally, for the 2011 Homecoming King and Queen, participation in the 2012 Homecoming is required in the following areas: Announce the court at the selected athletic event. Be present at the court dinner to act as a MC or moderator. Attend the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen.
