Family Weekend 2011 – Evaluation Summary The following summary outlines highlights from our assessment of Family Weekend 2011 as well as proposed action items and recommendations for 2012. See Appendix A for a registration report for individual events. Points of Pride: - Involvement from four student leaders in planning and implementation of weekend. Addition of Engaged Learning Exploration program, providing opportunity for over 100 students/families to learn about engagement opportunities on campus. Over 300 families registered for the weekend. Stuff-A-Bear event was highlight of weekend for families with younger children, and to provide social interaction between families. Quantitative Data Results: A short survey was included in hard copy in each registration packet, as well as sent online to the main contact of each family, yielding a response from 61 families. The survey showed the following items with the highest and lowest percentage of Strongly Agree and Agree (See Appendix B for survey questions with full listing of percentages). Item: 2d 1a 1c Item: Family Weekend was fun and enjoyable. The online registration process was intuitive, and easy to navigate. Family Weekend information was well publicized. Agreement 95% 93.4% 93.3% Question: Item: Family Weekend provided an opportunity to learn about ways to get involved on campus. The schedule for Family Weekend had events for family members of all ages. The schedule for Family Weekend provided a good balance of structured and free time. Agreement 2b 1d 1e 77.4% 78.7% 78.7% Qualitative Data Themes: The following themes stood out from the open ended comments on the survey, and in feedback received directly during the weekend or posted on the Brockport parents’ facebook page. - “Would have liked to see more events planned on Saturday. More things to do beyond the football game for families not interested in athletics.” “No formal event on Sunday felt strange, would like a closing brunch or some activity to do in the morning before we leave” Page 1 of 3 - “Registration was confusing, didn’t understand payment options until we received a phone call” “Minimal events for children of young ages” “Everyone was cheerful and happy, great opportunity to see my daughter on her own campus, I am so proud” Assumptions - - The score for question 2b is inconsistent with other feedback that was received through the Engaged Learning Exploration. If families were not interested or able to attend that program, they may still not be aware of opportunities to get involved on campus. Question 1d illustrates a lack of effective communication prior to the weekend about available activities, and specifically the intended audience for each activity. The high marks received on question 1a are inconsistent with the qualitative theme of confusion on the registration site. This leads us to believe work does need to be done on certain aspect of the site, not a complete overhaul. Recommendations/Action Items for 2012: - Add open skate/gym/pool if possible on Saturday to give opportunity for social/younger sibling activity. Add farewell brunch on Sunday, possibly with a program. Better signage on campus; “Welcome Families”, “This way to registration”, etc. Add sibling/student v. parents’ game (volleyball or basketball). Add photo booth on Saturday afternoon for social interaction (ice cream, snacks, etc.). BASC Food Extravaganza, college student favorites, most popular food? Future alumni shirts for siblings? Invite professors to open lectures during the day on Friday. About 175 families registered but did not pick up packet. Closed out events were not at full capacity. Re-work registration site/instructions. Add more/better information on website about what to do in the local community, possibly coordinate a shopping trip in downtown Brockport.
