Jeanette Berrie
Attended ARMA Induction Programme in Blackpool (June 2014).
Outcomes: Acquisition of a broad overview of key aspects of research administration role.
Martin Cloonan
Presented a paper at international conference Studying Music – A Conference in Honour of
Simon Frith (April 2014). Outcomes: A potential chapter in the edited collection of the work
of Simon Frith which is likely to attract a considerable audience.
David J. Code – 1
Presented a paper and chaired a session of four papers at the Music and Screen Media
Conference (June 2014). Outcomes: Proposed article to Routledge in an edited collection
under applicant’s own direction, potential for further collaborations in field of music and
sound in documentary film.
David J. Code – 2
Application for fees and rights for illustrative images to appear in two articles: one in Scottish
Music Review (Autumn 2013) and U Rochester Press Volume Debussy: Resonances (early
2014); one in musicology journal JMRA. Outcomes: Three publications as detailed above.

Attended Eighth Biennial International Conference on Music Since 1900 (September 2013) and
chaired, moderated and responded to the panel session Deconstructing Neoclassicism.
Outcomes: Book chapter for the Ashgate Research Guide Music and Modernism, potential
future network development.
Patricia de Montfort
Archive visit to Jopling Collection (March 2014) and attendance at workshop entitled The
Collector and His Circle at the Institute of Historical Research, London (July 2014). Outcomes:
Exhibition of Jopling’s work (January 2015) and launch of book publication to coincide with
exhibition. Also conference attendance assisted with content development and planned
public re-launch of Exhibition Culture website (2015-16).
Minty Donald
Presented a paper on current practice-as-research project at the Royal Geographic Society
Annual Conference in London (August 2014). Outcomes: Received valuable feedback on
research project and research towards delivery of the paper informs on-going practice-led
research project entitled Guddling About: Glasgow.
Nick Fells
Undertook a development workshop for a new commission from the Performing Right
Society Foundation with the Coull String Quarted, University of Warwick (December
2013). Outcomes: New composition which will be performed at University of Glasgow,
Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester), and City of Derry in 2014.
Ian Garwood
Delivered a paper at the Annual Conference for Cinema and Media Studies (Seattle, WA)
entitled Lost in Non-Translation: Analysing Film Voices from a Position of Linguistic Incompetence
(March 2014). Outcomes: Two potential outlets for article publication, one in the journal
Music, Sound and the Moving Image, and one in the edited collection Locating the Voice in Film:
Critical Approaches and Global Practices. In addition, a video essay will accompany the written
output and this has guaranteed publication on Audiovisualcy (the website which curates
video essays).
Ian Goode
Delivered a paper on his current research project, the History of the Highlands and Islands
Film Guild, at the annual NECS conference (Milan, June 2014). Outcomes: Paper will
contribute to his monograph (due in 2016) and inform a major AHRC grant application
submitted in Spring 2014.
Katie Gough and Steve Greer
Presented papers at TaPRA Conference (Theatre and Performance Research Association)
at the Royal Conservatoire, Scotland. Outomes: Conference papers will be expanded for
journal publication.
Louise Harris
Attended two sonic arts festivals/conferences to present three different forms of her
creative output: Sonorities Festival, Belfast (performance of live audiovisual work
intervention: coaction at the opening concert of the festival), April 2014, and world premiere
installation of new fixed audiovisual work indusium at Linux Audio Conference, Karlsruhe,
Germany (May 2014). Outcomes: Paper accompanying indisium will be presented in
Karlsruhe and opportunities for new works to reach wider audiences. Networking
opportunities and positive implications for AHRC Research Network grant proposal.
Björn Heile
Presented a paper at the Royal Musical Association Annual Conference, Institute of Musical
Research, University of London (September 2013). Outcomes: Volume of articles by
Glasgow’s music faculty entitles Music Studies for the Twenty-first Century, as well as further
connectiosn with the planned volume and other projects.
Amy Holdsworth – 1
Attended second biannual meeting of the Northern Television Studies Research Group at
University of Hull. Outcomes: Consolidation of Television Studies network, discussion of
the aims of the group and future role in UK wide networks, presentation of work-inprogress leading to delivery of conference paper and article on ‘Homesickness and
Television’.
Amy Holdsworth – 2
Attended Northern Television Studies Research Group at the University of Sunderland.
Outcomes: Relaunch of the NTVRG, consolidation of the aims of the group (e.g.
collaborative projects, network grant application).
David Hopkins – 1
Delivery of paper at the Tate Liverpool conference: The Ludic Museum, entitled Mr.
Duchamp Told Us We Could Play Here, January 2014. Outcomes: on-line publishing, Tate
Papers 2015. (Papers from the conference to be published by Tate Liverpool).
David Hopkins – 2
Co-organised an academic session at the European Network for Avant-Garde and
Modernism Studies conference (Helsinki, August 2014). Presentation of a paper entitled
Peau de Balle: Duchamp’s Refusal at the same conference to disseminate research findings.
Outcomes: Essay in D. Hopkins (ed): The Blackwell Companion to Dada and Surrealism, to be
published 2016.
Frances Lennard
Attended symposium entitled Made in Oceania: Social and Cultural Meaning, Conservation and
Preservation of Oceanic Tapa at Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Cologne, Germany (January
2014). Outcomes: Research grant application to AHRC. Research to be disseminated in
multiple ways (publications, exhibition) if the application is successful.
Deborah Lewer
Attended conference as co-chair/convenor of a panel at the European Avant-Garde and
Modernism conference, Helsinki, Finland (August 2014). Outcomes: Plans for publication of
the papers to be edited as a themed volume. Paper presented will lead to publication in this
context or separately.
David Martin-Jones – 1
Organised a major international conference at University of Glasgow, July 2014 entitled FilmPhilosophy, enhancing the international reputation of SCCA globally. Costs towards expenses
of two keynote speakers. Outcomes: Enhancement of SCCA profile and planned, special
edition of the open access online journal Film-Philosophy based on the conference theme
‘Film-Philosophy amidst a World of Cinemas’.
David Martin-Jones – 2
Organised a one-day workshop entitled ‘Proliferating Ethical Encounters in Film and Media’,
University of Glasgow, October 2013. Costs towards travel of three speakers based in
England. Outcomes: Selected contributors will either be incorporated into existing plans for
an edited collection on Cinema and Ethics, and/or for an additional journal issue on this
topic.
Hilary Macartney
Will attend CEHA XX Congresso conference (El Greco on his 4th Centenary), in Toledo,
Spain (October 2014) to present a paper on the controversial Lady in a Fur Wrap painting.
Outcomes: Conference paper will be published in the Acts of the Conference, and the
research for the paper will be used in the catalogue raisonné which will be the main output of
the Stirling Maxwell Spanish Paintings Project. Also networking opportunities.
Margaret F. MacDonald
Conducted research into J. McNeill Whistler’s The Oil Paintings in the UK, France and the
USA in order to create an online catalogue raisonné. Outcomes: Aside from the online
catalogue, to secure provisionally promised funding from the Lunder Foundation, Waterville,
Maine, and publication of an article on Whistler’s early work in France.
Simon Murray
Delivered a keynote speech at the European Platform and Symposium on Performance
Training organised by the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts, Helsinki (January
2014). Outcomes: Potential for contributions by Murray et al. to be written up as a linked
‘trilogy’ for publication in ine of Britain’s main theatre and performance journals. Also,
elements of the paper presented will inform a new and extended edition of Physical Theatres:
A Critical Introduction which Murray has been commissioned to undertake for publication in
2015.
Eva Moreda Rodriguez – 1
Presented papers at two conferences, Singing a Song in a Foreign Land at the Royal College of
Music, London (February 2014), and Roots of Revival at the Horniman Museum, Forest Hill,
London (March 2014). Outcomes: Exchange with scholar at both conferences will have a
significant impact on Eva’s upcoming monograph: The Exiles Who Never Left: Republican
Composers in the Musical Life of Francoist Spain.
Eva Moreda Rodriguez – 2
Presented the paper ‘Writing an Exile back into National Histories of Music: The Reception
of Roberto Gerhard in Francoist Spain’ at the Anglo-Catalan Society Annual Conference,
Manchester 2-3 Nov 2013. Outcomes: Exchange with scholars at conference will assist with
revision of Eva’s upcoming chapter on Gerhard as part of a book project on Spanish exiled
composers.
Tom Nichols
Applied for funds to cover the cost of high resolution scans of images and copyright
permissions for a journal article entitled ‘Double vision: The Ambivalent Imagery of
Drunkenness in Early Modern Europe, early October 2013. Outcomes: Publication of this
journal article.
Victoria Price
Presented a paper at the biennial British Shakespeare Association (BSA) conference entitled
‘Two Kingdoms Compassed by One Sea: Reconstructing Kingdoms and Reclaiming Histories
in David Greig’s Dunsinane’, 3-6 July, University of Stirling. Outcomes: Dissemination of
research findings arising from current book project on Scottish adaptations of Shakespeare,
also opportunity to make connections with VP’s own work and contemporary debates
about Shakepeare and Scotland; Shakespeare and nationhood(s).
Anita Quye – 1
Contribution to the organisational costs for the international conference ‘Dyes in History
and Archaeology 33 (DHA33)’, 29-31 October 2013, which included display board hire and
hire of Wolfson Building atrium. Outcomes: Enhanced presence of presentations of
historical colorants research; showcase for TCC’s scholarly research.
Anita Quye – 2
Attended a conference entitled ‘Bright Ideas! Light Management for Cultural Collections –
Seminar and Workshop’ at Museum of Liverpool, 25 March 2013. Outcomes: influence on
funding proposal for research project on the conservation science of coloured materials;
opportunity for Anita to become Work Package Coordinator on collaborative research
project in conjunction with University of Amsterdam (UoA) and The Cultural Heritage
Agency of The Netherlands.
Adrienne Scullion
Applied for funding for ‘On stage: a KE-led research development strategy based on the
Scottish Theatre Archive’, a 16-month project to deliver a step change in the work and
profile of the School’s capacity as the research engine of the resource ‘Scottish Theatre
Archive’. The project has two main objectives: promoting wider public engagement with the
School’s research and animating an academic and public-facing research culture (Oct 2013 –
Feb 2015). Outcomes: The project will deliver a new set of collaborations with partner
libraries and institutions; a refreshed online presence for the Scottish Theatre Archive; a
documented record of public engagement; a new strategic plan for research and impact,
driven by Theatre Studies at Glasgow.
David Code, Ian Garwood, Liz Greene, Louise Harris
Set-up of Knowledge Exchange and Outreach Activities involving the Sound and Moving
Image Research Group (SMIRG). Funding sought to support three events and two group
archive visits, to take place between December 2013 – Summer 2014. Outcomes: An active
research group focused on attracting external funding and contributing to the public profile
of the School.
Jane Stanley
Attendance at Scottish Crucible’s networking dinner, 27 June 2014, to maintain ties with
recent collaborators and foster potential new research connections. Outcomes: Engagement
with Scottish Crucible may lead to future funded research.
Minna Törmä
Attendance at EACS (European Association of Chinese Studies) conference in Braga and
Coimbra, Portugal on 22 July 2014. Presented a bid on behalf of University of Glasgow to
host EACS 2018. Outcomes: The outcome of a successful bid will be that the University of
Glasgow will be hosting an important conference on Chinese studies in 2018.
Sabine Wieber
Applied for funding for delivery of a research paper, entitled ‘Gustav Klimt’s Little Red
Notebook, 1896-1903’ at the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing’s inaugural conference,
Wolfson College, 20-22 September 2013. Outcomes: Sabine plans to turn the conference
paper into a peer-reviewed essay for Austrian Studies.
