AND THEIR DESCENDANTS
Since its founding in March of 1955, the Goldsmith Family Circle has strived to be
not only an organization that keeps the Goldsmith Family together, but also one that could
keep the history of the family alive.i A family reaches a point when, because of the sheer
number of relatives and the horizontal spread of those relatives, a family tree is a logistical
impossibility. This text aims to document that family. The Goldsmith Family is generally
considered to begin with David Hirsha and Chai Etta, but this document will instead begin
from who we now believe to be David’s great-grandfather who, incidentally, was also
named David. NOTE: All dates listed below are approximate, and all persons through the
first generation were born in Biržai, Lithuania unless otherwise noted. (Ancestors and the
families of cousins of David Hirsha Smardon are given letters instead of roman numerals.)

November Uprising (1830-1831), leading to his running away in 1832.

Sometime between 1846 and 1887, Volf and David changed their last name to
Smardon to avoid connection to their father, Itsik. Descendants of Volf and David make up
