ISCMS Music Festival 2016– Zhuhai, China Wednesday 27th January - Sunday 31st January, 2016. Hosted by Dulwich College, Zhuhai Patron: Karl Jenkins OBE 26th August 2015 Dear Parents, Your child has expressed an interest in participating in the International Schools Choral Music Society’s annual festival in Zhuhai, China, February 2016. Below are preliminary details of the event and an application form to be returned to your child’s music teacher by 12th October 2015 The International Schools Choral Music Society’s annual Music Festival gives talented music students from all over the region the chance to sing in a large chorus, play in a full-sized symphony orchestra or big band. ISCMS students and teachers have the opportunity to learn from internationally renowned guest artists and practitioners. Students will perform some stunning repertoire and have the chance to attend a range of workshops. This year the students will be performing Parry ‘Blessed Pair of Sirens’, Bernstein ‘Chichester Psalms’, Copland ‘Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo’ and Borodin “Polovstian Dances’. The Big Band will perform a number of jazz pieces and a combined piece with the orchestra and choir. ISCMS has been in existence for nine years. In 2016, the society choir will consist of over 200 students from International Schools from around the region, accompanied by a symphony orchestra from participating schools. For the second year, there will also be a Big Band for jazz musicians. More details about the Society and the festival can be found at http://www.iscms.net This year we are very fortunate to have secured stunning facilities in Zhuhai to host and perform the gala concert in. The Zhuhai International Conference and Exhibition Centre, houses two beautiful concert halls, and is situated adjacent to the new Sheraton Hotel which will host the students. There are also serviced suites available on the same site for any parents who wish to travel to attend the final gala concert. We will depart for Zhuhai at lunchtime on Wednesday 27th January, so parents should be aware that the students will miss two full days of school. Itinerary: Wednesday 27th Jan Thursday 28th Jan Friday 29th Jan Saturday 30th Jan Sunday 31st Jan Depart midday, by ferry, from Macau Ferry Pier, Sheung Wan Evening concert by Metro Vocal Group Rehearsals and Workshops. Evening trip to fireworks at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom Rehearsals and Workshops Big Band Performance in Sheraton Hotel Rehearsals and Concert at Zhuhai International Conference and Exhibition Centre Return (midday) to Macau Ferry Pier, Sheung Wan The approximate cost of the trip will be HK$7000 including the ferry, hotel accommodation in twin rooms, all meals, transport, insurance and music scores. This figure is based on a projected group of 20 students/staff and current exchange rates, and therefore may change dependent on the final group size and prevailing rates. The students will be accompanied by the STC Music teachers at a ratio of at least 1:10. In order to secure a place on the trip, please enclose a non-returnable deposit of $2000 with the application form. The balance of HK$5000 will be due by 1st November. At the end of the trip, any remaining funds will be refunded to parents. To be eligible to perform with the orchestra or Big Band, instrumentalists must be at least Grade 8 standard. This year, they will be expected to upload a video of their performance to ensure quality and assist with allocating seating. Singers are not required to audition. Participating students will be issued with music and given access to an MP3 recording of their parts, and will be expected to learn their parts thoroughly before we depart for the festival. There will be two rehearsals in HK before we go to give the students the opportunity to receive help with any passages with which they are having difficulty. The last eight festivals have been hugely beneficial to the students involved, with many of them intending, this year, to return for a third or even fourth time. The opportunity to work intensively on such large-scale works, and at a very high standard, has proved extremely useful and memorable for them. With the festival being hosted so close to HK this year, the cost of the trip is much reduced from previous years, and it is my hope to take a large delegation from STC to benefit from the experience. If you have any further queries about the trip, please do not hesitate to contact me.
