Roman technology.
Whole class: This lesson involves a bit of ‘weaving’ where the teacher does some teaching, then the children do an activity
and then there is a little more teaching, then another activity, etc.
Look at the class list of the Roman Legacies. Give out copies. Which do you think are the most important? Why? Working in
groups of 2 or 3, chn choose 1 ‘legacy’ from the list to research further. Model good internet research practice, finding the
information from more than one site, which words to enter into a search engine, clues to determine the suitability of
websites. Model note taking from websites: jot key words down to ensure that chn write the information in their own
words.
Easy/ Medium/ Hard
Use copies of the lists of Roman legacies, plus the table on which to record notes (session resources). Chn research their
Roman legacy and practise note taking. Have you found the information on more than one site? Have you jotted down the
notes in their own words?
Whole class: Bring the class back together and discuss their findings. Explain that they will be producing a page for a class
PowerPoint about the Roman legacy to present to another class/school assembly. Model opening up PowerPoint.
Demonstrate how to open a text box, insert an image, change the design and so on. Most chn will probably have
experience of this, or certainly of another Microsoft program, but some may not. Change your expectations accordingly.
Easy/ Medium/ Hard
Chn work in their small groups to create their PowerPoint slide. They must produce a slide with a heading, a text box of
information and an image.
Plenary Bring the PowerPoint slides together and discuss with the class the order they think they should go in. Which
legacy is most important? Should that go at the beginning? What should the title of the PowerPoint be?
Whenever possible, chn practise presenting their information so they are ready to present to their audience. Remind them
not simply to read from the screen, and to ‘perform’ for the audience so that it is interesting to watch.
Outcomes Children will
 Consider and discuss the impact of the Roman Empire on their lives today
 Use the internet to research part of the Roman legacy
