Endangered Species Act Under Attack In-District Congressional Meetings Talking Points The Endangered Species Act has a proven record of success in protecting wildlife in danger of extinction. It has helped prevent the extinction of treasured wildlife such as the American bald eagle, the Florida manatee, and the California condor as well as thousands of other plants, fish and animals. It has prevented more than 99 percent of listed species from going extinct. Congress should not interfere with this overwhelmingly successful law. We urge your boss* to oppose all congressional efforts to undermine the Endangered Species Act, including proposals to: o Block protections for particular species; o Weaken protections in certain geographic area(s); and/or o Undercut key provisions of the Act. We also urge your boss* to call on President Obama to reject all legislative “riders” attached to spending and other larger bills that block federal protections for species including gray wolves, sage grouse, and lesser prairie chicken. Such anti-wildlife riders further imperil the species at issue, and subject the Endangered Species Act to a “death by a thousand cuts” weakening. *If you are meeting directly with the legislator, please say “you” instead of “your boss.”
