UWP BILSA Alumni Chapter Meeting Minutes
Saturday, March 7, 2009
Alumni Conference Room
Meeting called to order at 9:00 am
Introduction of members present included: Michael Fiedler via phone, Erwin Zweifel, Liz Wood, Tiffany
Akins, Mark Haag, Ryan Weigel, Kim Schmelz, Shawn and Wendy Stankovich, Donna Perkins, Josh Saylor,
Frank Steck, and Katie Reichling
Secretary’s report from December 9, 2008- Wendy had corrections in treasurer’s report. Remove Carl’s
name in Treasurer’s report. Josh moved, Erwin (2) to accept correction- Motion passed
III.
Treasurer’s Report- BILSA alumni chapter will be receiving about $802 in regular dues and $117 in
graduating senior dues to be put in checking account Katie moved, Mark (2) to approve treasurer’s report.
Motion passed.
IV.
New Business – election of officers
A. Josh moved, Mark (2) to suspend bylaw Article B that requires written changes so when can have a
bylaw change here today. Motion approved.
B. Josh moved, Liz (2) that bylaw changes for director elections and officers in Article 3 of bylaws sections 3 & 5
be changed to say that the current board of directors will vote on the election of directors and that the officer elections
will take place after the director elections.
C. In Constitution and Bylaws, under Section 2, add word WHO under membership. Michael Fiedler
moved, Liz (2)- Motion passed.
VI. Scholarships
A. 2 $500 scholarships given into incoming freshman ag or biology majors
a. Discussed giving scholarships to other 3 areas
B. Dean Ford will discuss golf outing with Steve Becker and maybe changing to BILSA golf outing and taking it
over.
C. Wait till next meeting (Aug) to decide amounts, if they should be freshman or not, and what schools they
should come from.
a. How will the scholarships benefit us? Maybe looking at senior scholarships with membership or
those going towards a Master’s program.
VII. Old Business
A. World Dairy Expo (Sept 29th)- is it worth doing?
a. Table has been moved to Bistro Area
b. Discussed giving membership applications to UWP alumni and teachers
c. Discussed BILSA members getting emails to let them know about breakfast
d. Discussed getting stickers for alumni
B. Goals
a. Dean Ford will put together a list of what the college is doing
b. A committee will look at where we can best achieve our goals, including collaborating with other
clubs

i. Katie, Erin, Shawn, and Carl work with Jodi
ii. Further discussed at August meeting
c. Bike ride- June 20th to First Capitol
i. 20 mile ride and back to Platteville
ii. Should we get a cooler full of water?
iii. Will tell Bob whatever he needs help with to ask us
d. Golf outing
i. List started of who is coming- need teams of 3
ii. About $70 non club and $40 for club members to golf
iii. You don’t have to be a UWP alum
iv. Mark motioned, Erwin (2) to sponsor hole at golf tourney. Approved
e. Kim will see % of people paying dues in Alumni
i. Discussed sending out Alumni Today via email to juniors or seniors
ii. Possibly have board members attend Senior Salute
f. Pass around materials about why seniors should join alumni
i. Include Alumnation, alumni career services, car insurance, etc
ii. Possibly wait till they graduate. Otherwise information overload could occur.
iii. Marketing committee may be needed in future
VIII. College and Department Reports
A. General comments
a. Tuition going up 5-7%
b. BILSA will be making budget cuts soon
c. Distance education and tri-state initiative pushing up enrollment numbers
i. Student recruitment looking very strong
B. Biology
a. Boebel Hall will be remodeled in the fall- moving office spaces
b. Banquet- April 22 where scholarship winners announced
C. Business/Accounting
a. Classes are larger, some new faculty
b. Incorporating new computer programs
D. Industrial Studies
a. 100th Anniversary this year
b. People can become Ag Ed/ Tech Ed certified
IX. New Business
A. Alumni directories are out
B. June 28th- Donor Brunch
C. July 25th- Volunteer Dinner
D. November 1-6- Trip to Nashville, TN to CMA’s and more
a. $1275 for double room, $1539 for single
E. Raffle tickets available from Foundation Office
F. Alumni Today- last issue in April then emailed out
Katie moved, Mark (2) to adjourn meeting at 11:35. Motion passed. Next meeting August 15th.
