The Parent Teacher Organization of Lowes Island Elementary School
The PTO’s After School Activity Program is ready to start. Classes are $60 each unless noted and held
immediately after school. Classes will begin on November 5th and run through December 19th. Brief
class descriptions can be found on pages 2-4.

TUESDAY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Art from the Heart
Grades K-2
$15 Supply Fee
Instructor: Ms. Hanlon
Students will be introduced to a variety of art materials including watercolors and chalk pastels, and challenged to
explore various artistic techniques. Ms. Hanlon is the Art Teacher at Lowes Island.
Legos Galore
Grades K-2
Instructor: Ms. Oberlander
Students can create to their hearts desire with bins of thousands of Legos. Each week we will explore and build
something new. Ms. Oberlander is a Fourth Grade teacher at Lowes Island.
Tumbling
Grades K-2
Instructor: Ms. Carlson
In this introduction to Tumbling class, students will learn moves such as: cartwheels, round-offs, back bends and
handstands. Students will also be able to learn basic beam walks and jumps. Ms. Carlson is a Teacher in the Autistic
Support Classroom at Lowes Island.
Humanitarian Club
Grades K-5
Instructor: Nauliatyce Thompson
This class will teach children how to make big and small impacts on the world around them and the people in it. The
class will work together to complete several projects including: a canned food drive, making cards for senior citizens
and more! Ms. Thompson is a Lowes Island volunteer.
Puzzles and Cards
Grades K-5
Instructor: Mrs. Cypher
Students will learn to play various card games and will work on puzzles. Mrs. Cypher is a Second Grade teacher at
Lowes Island.
Legos Robotics – WeDo
Grades 2 and 3
Instructor: J. Peterson
Students will be able to build LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors and program their robots. This is a
great way for students to have fun while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Mr. Peterson is a Lowes Island parent.
Drama Club
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Mrs. Feddersen
Students will choose a play(s) to practice, collect props and make backdrops. The students will perform for parents
during the final class. Mrs. Feddersen is a Third Grade teacher at Lowes Island.
Food Gifts from the Kitchen
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Ann Holmes
Join us for a fun hands-on cooking class that teaches students how to make and give delicious food gifts. Mrs. Holmes
is Lowes Island parent.
Glass Art Mosaics
Grades 3-5
$20 Supply Fee
Instructor: Mimi Nyman
Students will design, construct and finish a 10 x 10 glass art mosaic using vitreous glass tiles, beads and shells. Mrs.
Nyman is a Lowes Island parent.
Kickball Club
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Mr. Conners
Come and play kickball with your friends after school! We will be outside so appropriate attire is important. Mr.
Conners is a Third Grade teacher at Lowes Island.
ToastMasters Youth Leadership Program
Grade 5 only (Class fee $40)
Instructor: Labrita Andrews
The Youth Leadership Program is an informal course in the art of communication and leadership. The ability to
clearly express your thoughts to others so that they are heard and understood is important for students to become
successful in life. Students will learn how to: overcome the nervousness of speaking before an audience; organize and
present their ideas logically and convincingly; listen carefully to others ideas; participate in, and even lead, group
discussions or meetings. Mrs. Andrews is Lowes Island parent.
WEDNESDAY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Stories and More
Grades K-2
Instructor: Ms. Steuer
Each week, the class will read a different, popular children’s book to build literacy skills and engage students.
Students will then engage in a fun craft or activity to go with the book. Ms. Steuer is a First Grade teacher at Lowes
Island.
American Sign Language
Grades K-5
Instructor: Ms. Atwood
Come and learn the basics of American Sign Language in an engaging and fun class! Students will also learn an
overview of Deaf Culture. Ms. Atwood is the Speech-Language Pathologist at Lowes Island.
Fun with Farsi
Grades K-5
Instructor: Fatemeh Towhidi Estaki
Persian-Farsi language is taught through songs, games and fun activities. Students will learn how to read, write and
speak simple words and sentences in Farsi. Mrs. Estaki is a Lowes Island parent.
Geography Fun
Grades K-5
Instructor: Meline Petrosyan
Travel with us!! Students will explore the world and learn about different countries, their cultures and locations!
Students will learn about maps, play geographic games and develop a geographic perspective! Ms. Petrosyan is a
Lowes Island parent.

Instructor: Lee Bochenek
Learn the fundamentals of yoga in this fun and energetic class! Yoga is a healthy form of exercise and wellness.
Perfect for all children of any activity level. Yoga is a centuries old tradition that aids in calming breathing techniques,
stretching, focus and physical fitness. It is the perfect addition to a child's busy sports and academic schedule. Mrs.
Bochenek is a Lowes Island parent.

Instructor: Ms. Tschinkel
Students will use their creative side and imagination while using beads to create a variety of crafts ~ not just jewelry!!
Ms. Tschinkel is a Kindergarten Aide at Lowes Island.
Kids in the Kitchen
Grades K-2

Instructor: Kathleen Ecker
Each week we will make a different healthy meal or snack. This will be a hands-on class with the students doing the
preparation! In each class we will discuss proper food handling, preparation, kitchen safety, nutrition, manners as well
as cooking healthy, delicious food! Mrs. Ecker is a Lowes Island parent.
Board Games Galore
Grades K-5
Instructor: Lexie Haskell
Love playing board games? Want to unwind with friends after school? This will be a great class for you! You’ll get
to play a variety of games with other students. We will focus on learning one type of game every week – with plenty
of free-time too! There will be games at all levels so everyone is welcome to come! Mrs. Haskell is a Lowes Island
parent.

Running and Sport Club
Grades K-5
Instructor: Melanie Schweigert
Come join us to learn about the sport of running and other cardio-vascular exercise. It is the goal of this class to
awaken student’s love of movement and sports! Parents are welcome to join in the fun as well. All levels of physical
ability are welcome. We will be outside so appropriate attire is important. Mrs. Schweigert is a new Lowes Island
parent!
Photography
Grades 2-5
Instructor: Linda Cole
Come explore the world behind a camera… learn the basics of Digital Photography. We will be making a photo
album, picture frame and picture puzzle. Students will also be exploring trick photography, mystery pictures and a
scavenger hunt. At the conclusion of the class students will have a Photograph Show which will include pictures we
take and print. Mrs. Cole is a Lowes Island parent.
Chess Club
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Mr. Knecht
Checkmate! Come and learn how to play chess with your friends. Mr. Knecht is a Fifth grade teacher at Lowes
Island.
Handmade Crafts
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Ann Holmes
A D.I.Y. class that teaches students to create wonderful homemade crafts to share! We will make soaps, ornaments,
candles and more! Mrs. Holmes is a Lowes Island parent.
Sports and Games
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Thomas Newell
Come and learn a different sport or game each week! We will focus on lawn games, table games, playground games
and field games. Mr. Newell is a Lowes Island parent.
Girls So Positive
Grades 4 and 5
Instructor: Labrita Andrews
Girls will create positive and inspiring mini webisodes to be shared via social media to other girls around the globe.
Students will learn how to create their videos from start to finish. Students will choose which area of video production
they would like to focus on i.e., lighting, writing, editing, producing, cast, set design. Each video webisode will share
a positive message about the importance of having self-confidence, the value of making good decisions and choosing
your words wisely, etc. Parents will need to grant special permission for any students that will be “cast” in the
webisodes before they will be uploaded to social media. Mrs. Andrews is a Lowes Island parent.
FRIDAY CLASS DESCRIPTION
Elementary Ballet
Grades K-5
Instructor: Ms. Oberlander
This class is designed around a structured classical ballet class in which students learn technique, vocabulary,
flexibility, coordination and confidence. Students will apply their ballet skills to inspired choreography that matches
movement to music through creativity! Ms. Oberlander is a Fourth Grade teacher at Lowes Island.

BEFORE YOU REGISTER:
Create or UPDATE your account at: https://www.pay4schoolstuff.com. PLEASE update your student’s
information, especially their current grade level. This is VERY important with helping the registration process
work smoothly. You can create or update your account at any time.
HOW TO REGISTER:
1. All classes are registered online by logging onto your Pay4SchoolStuff account
2. Click the red ‘select’ button next to the student that you wish to register for ASAP
3. Click the red ‘select’ button next to ASAP Class (You need to register for each class separately.)
4. You will be directed to the available ASAP classes. Note: The number of available spaces left in the
class will be displayed. Click the select box for any class in which your student is interested. Then
click on the ‘Add to Cart’ button at the bottom of the page.
5. Proceed to payment page
**You will need to complete this process for each ASAP class separately, so that the registrations are placed correctly.
If you do not have access to a computer, please contact the ASAP Coordinator before noon on Monday,
September 29th, to make other arrangements.
Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION:
Confirmation letters and parent confirmation forms will come home via the email provided on your account at
https://www.pay4schoolstuff.com. Please let the ASAP Coordinator know if you do not receive your email by
Wednesday, October 8th.
RETURN OF CONFIRMATION PAGE:
The confirmation form will need to be PRINTED, FILLED OUT and RETURNED to school no later than
Friday, October 17th or your student will not be able to attend their first ASAP Class.
PAYMENT: All ASAP classes are $60, unless noted. Supplies and materials are included unless noted. Payment
may be made by Visa, MasterCard or Discover on the website. Class fees are non-refundable.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships are available for families who meet the Federal Income Guidelines for the Free and
Reduced-Price Meals program. (The school cannot provide verification of eligible students so parents must contact the
ASAP Coordinator with information before noon on Monday, September 29th to ensure your child a spot in the
program.)
MAKE-UP POLICY: After-school classes will not be held if Loudoun County Public Schools are closed due to
inclement weather. In the event of a school closing no ASAP classes will be held. The schedule this session does not
allow for a make-up class due to time constraints.

ASAP CLASS INFORMATION
Classes are held from 2:50-3:50 pm.
Upon school dismissal, children will follow the direction provided by their grade level teachers. They will then be
dismissed directly to their ASAP Class location, where they will be met by their ASAP Instructor.
Pick-up is promptly at 3:50 pm. A late fee of $1.00 per minute will be assessed on the second late pick-up.
All students must be picked up and signed out of their ASAP class. Students are not allowed to walk home at
the conclusion of their class.
CASA children are welcome to participate and will be escorted to CASA after class.
ASAP CLASS DATES
Tuesday classes will be held on November 11, 18, 25 and December 2, 9, 16. There is no school on 11/4/14.
Wednesday classes will be held on November 5, 12, 19 and December 3, 10, 17. There is no school on 11/26/14.
Thursday classes will be held on November 6, 13, 20 and December 4, 11, 18. There is no school on 11/27/14.
Friday classes will be held on November 7, 14, 21 and December 5, 12, 19. There is no school on 11/28/14.
