Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
 Analyze advanced-level ESL texts, such as essays, short stories and novels for main point,
theme, content, vocabulary, logic, and figurative language;
 Write responses to reading assignments, using sentence variety, parallelism, advanced-level
vocabulary, and advanced-level grammatical structures with minimal errors;
 Understand and use new vocabulary and idioms;
 Demonstrate comprehension of advanced-level ESL texts and dictation.
Class Rules:
1. The teacher may change this syllabus at any time.
2. Any student who misses 2 classes will be dropped from the class.
3. Students can turn most homework in late. Homework turned in after the beginning of class will
be marked down 50%. NO EXPLANATIONS OR EXCUSES NECESSARY AND NO
EXCEPTIONS. Note: some assignments must be done in class and cannot be turned in late.
4. If a student knows in advance that they will miss class on the day of a test, the student may
arrange with the instructor to take the test, without penalty, at an alternate time.
5. Students who miss class on the day of a test without first contacting the instructor will not be
allowed to take a “make-up” test. At the end of the semester your lowest test score will be
dropped.
6. No student will be allowed to prevent the instructor from teaching or prevent other students from
learning by disrupting the class. Any student who disrupts the class will first receive a verbal
warning, second receive a written warning, and finally be removed from the class. “Disrupting
class” includes, but is not limited to, talking to other students during a lecture, going in and out of
the classroom to answer a cell phone, and exhibiting aggressive behavior toward the instructor or
other students.
7. All students must follow Pierce College's rules as expressed in the “Student Code of Conduct.”.
Grades:
You will be graded on attendance & participation (10%), homework & in-class assignments (30%),
quizzes (30%), & a two-part final exam (30%).

A weekly schedule of readings and assignments with instructions and due dates is posted on Moodle.
