Recommended changes to the MSE-PD emphasis in Information, Technology and Libraries UW-Whitewater is a member of the University of Wisconsin System School Library Education Consortium (UWSSLEC). The UWSSLEC faculty have revised the 902 with stipulations coursework as part of their recent Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grant from IMLS and are now revising the 902 coursework and offering suggestions for changes to the DPI content guidelines for the 902 license that would bring the guidelines up to date with national standards from ALA/AASL , ISTE, and NBPTS as well as with best practice in the field. This will impact the two options for the emphasis in the MSE-PD at UWW. Two courses for the 902 renewable license will no longer be required. Option 1: Licensed teachers do coursework for the complete 902 license after their undergraduate degree as part of a master’s degree Many students have taken one of the literature courses or the technology course and can demonstrate competency through the portfolio rather than retaking the course. There are 10 library courses plus the practicum course which are all required for licensure, but many students may have to take only 8-9 of the content courses based on their prior coursework and/or experience. The combined practicum is one course with extensive work in the student’s current school as well as two weeks in other school libraries. All are required to take this. Students will take a minimum of 27 credits in the library area. For the degree, the course EDFOUND 780 is required, LIBMEDIA 741 is substituted for the Issues and Perspectives course (EDFOUND / CIGNRL 723) and the practicum course and the final portfolio milestone are the capstone experience. The first portfolio is attached to the practicum and the second one is done after all 902 coursework is completed. These are not separate portfolio courses at this time. The final 902 capstone portfolio will be a milestone. Currently this is available from UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater. The practicum is done at the graduate level at some campuses (including UWW) and at undergraduate on others after the coursework for the minor and student teaching are completed. The 902 with stipulations license allows them to be hired and complete the 902 license at the graduate level after graduation. To earn a master’s degree when one already holds a 902 with stipulations license, the following coursework will be required. Students will have three elective courses to be chosen with advisor consent. The education core courses remain the same as the current emphasis area. Students will do both the capstone project for the degree and the capstone portfolio for licensure.
