The Density Column project consists of 2 parts, the density column and a poster. Each part will be
assessed. Below are the instructions that will allow you to obtain the maximum number of points.
Density Column
Your goal is to create a density column with 4 separate layers. You will use a sealable plastic bottle (e.g.
water bottle) and fill it with items that have different densities. Due to the different densities, layers will be
formed. You will seal the bottle by putting the lid back on and then placing tape (preferably something
heavy duty like duct tape) around the cap and neck of the bottle. You should select items of a different
color, when possible, so that the layers may be easily seen. When the density column is shaken, the items
should re-separate into their original layers so be sure to test it before you bring it to school. Keep
solubility in mind. Please do not use hazardous materials such as gasoline, mercury, etc. Check with
teacher if material is questionable.
Poster
You are to make a creative poster explaining your density column. This poster should be on plain white
paper with a construction paper background oriented in the portrait style. The construction paper should
be no larger than 9” x 12”. Your poster must include a title and a label for each layer. Next to the label for
each layer you must include the density value of the item in g/mL.
