Denisa Hrušková SPEAKING ACTIVITY 1 Read the following text . For point 1-4, decide which sentence (A)–(J) below the text best fits into each of the numbered gaps in the article. Improving your English speaking skills will help you communicate more easily and effectively. But how do you become a more confident English speaker? (1) ............................... Any practice is good – whether you speak to someone who is a native English speaker or not. It's important to build your confidence. If possible, use simple English sentence structure that you know is correct, so that you can concentrate on getting your message across. (2) ............................... Use words and phrases you know in new situations. Native English speakers are more likely to correct you if you use the wrong word than if you use the wronggrammar. Experimenting with vocabulary is a really good way of getting feedback. Try to respond to what people say to you. You can often get clues to what people think by looking at their body language. Respond to them in a natural way. (3) ............................... into and from your own language. This takes too much time and will make you more hesitant. If you forget a word, do what native English speakers do all the time, and say things that 'fill' the conversation. This is better than keeping completely silent. Try using um, or er, if you forget the word. (4) ............................... It's important to use a natural rhythm when speaking English, but if you speak too fast it will be difficult for people to understand you. Try to relax when you speak – you'll find your mouth does most of the pronunciation work for you. When you speak English at normal speed, you'll discover that many of the pronunciation skills, such as linking between words, will happen automatically. A Try to experiment with the English you know B Practise where you can, when you can C Don't speak too fast! D Try NOT to translate ACTIVITY 2 Read the text and choose the correct option. However, speaking is an\the only requirement to be fluent. It is normal for babies and children to learn speaking first, become fluent, than\then start reading, then writing. So the natural order is listening, speaking, reading, then writing. First Problem Isn't it strange that schools across the world teach reading first, then writing, then listening, and finally speaking? Although\However it is different, the main reason is because when you learn a second language, you need to read material to understand and learn it. So even though the natural order is listening, speaking, reading, then writing, the order for ESL students is reading, listening, speaking, then writing. Second Problem The reason many people can read and listen is why\because that's all they practice. But in order to speak English fluently, you need to practice speaking. Don't stop at the listening portion, and when you study, don't just listen. Speak out loud the material you are listening to and practice what you hear. Practice speaking out loud until your mouth and brain can do it within\without any effort. By doing so, you will be able to speak English fluently.
