Hautapu School is nestled in a picturesque semi-rural setting, 10 minutes north - west of
Cambridge. Our full primary school (Years 1-8) is surrounded by mature trees, paddocks
with cows grazing, and the constant activities of rural life. It is a quiet, tranquil environment
which nurtures the mind and the body. The ethic of care is shown in the relationships
between our children, staff and community. Our senior children have leadership
opportunities to not only assist with the running of the school but to set the basis for lifelong learning and caring about others and the environment. Our classrooms are named
after native trees and shrubs (trees of knowledge, values and learning).
“The seeds of knowledge”; “Te kākano o te mātauranga”
Pōhutukawa Pod: (Hautapu Spirit and Culture); Totara: (Respect); Rimu: (Hauora- wellbeing); Kowhai: (New life, inquiry); Tawa: (Strength and Courage); Nikau : (Cultural, The
Arts); Koromiko: (Beliefs and celebrations); Kauri: (Mana)
Our children experience a range of academic, cultural, sporting and camp activities in a wellbalanced curriculum. We teach our children to be self-regulated learners who are able to
reflect on their own learning processes and to ‘learn how to learn’. We have twice yearly
Student Led Conferences.
All our children participate in yearly speech writing and presentations to develop confidence
and the ability to speak to an audience. We are working towards our Gold Award as an
Enviroschool with established classroom plots and the development of a propagation shed.
The school has been invited to grow and plant Kowhai tress for landscaping planting
surrounding the new Cambridge Expressway.
We are fortunate to have a heated, 20 metre swimming pool
which was opened in 2011 thanks to the Board and
generosity and support of the community. We are able to
offer our students swimming skills in Terms 1 and 4 plus after
school swimming coaching. In Term two our tennis/netball
courts were resurfaced using TigerTurf.
As a traditional rural school we continue to hold Agricultural Days, Flower Shows, Whole
School productions and Grandparent Afternoons.
