Call to Order by Chair Monica McFerrin at 12:33 PM
Review/Approval of February 27, 2013 Minutes at 12:35 PM
Chair Report:
A. Review of Meetings (Executive Staff and VP/Provost Meetings)
1. Updates from Executive Staff Meeting 2/27/14:
a. Barnes & Noble: Presentation of comparison of book sales. Conclusion of study (quoted
from B&N document): “Faculty textbook adoptions directly influence the number of titles
that are available to rent. Custom packages, especially those containing disposable
access codes, frequently eliminates [sic] the rental and digital option. When reviewing all
Fall 2013 courses College wide, we can identify opportunities to unify adoptions and
reduce the number of customized [sic] titles. Of the 657 courses we have adoptions fo r,
we identified 263 courses that are offered at all campuses. Of these courses, 35% are
using the same book regardless of location, 8% were used on the majority of campuses,
and 57% were using a different book at each campus. The common difference between
campuses are custom or package related adoptions. Breakdown by campus (Campus, #of
courses, %custom adoptions): Virginia Beach, 543, 33%; Norfolk, 275, 27%; Portsmouth,
344, 22%; Chesapeake, 404, 32%. In summary, college wide departmental collaboration
on textbook requirements [sic] can significantly increase the likelyhood [sic] of reducing
overall cost of textbooks for students.”

B. VP/Provost Meeting 03/07/14:
1. Major Issues:
a. Student Evaluation of Faculty/Scantron: All Spring 2014 courses will be evaluated using the Scantron
online form. Paper forms will be used for face-to-face Summer 2014 courses.
b. Summer Camps: All campuses to hold summer camps. Being coordinated by WFD, but will involve most
divisions. Ad’s are out; programs are to be career based. Faculty to be paid at $25.00 per hour. More to
come later.
C. Items from the Floor:
1. The On-Line Audit previously discussed has been put on hold until a later date (TBD).
The Rubric is to be updated.
IV.
Old Business
A. Elections – Virginia Beach elections are complete. See attached page for the 2014-2015 structure.
B. Campus Scholar Award – There is a need for volunteers for this committee. Stress to fellow faculty that
this is an opportunity for the evaluation input , Recipient recognition is currently slated to receive numerous
Certificates. The Senate suggests that this be accomplished electronically (i.e. email).
C. Shredders – The shredder process will be in place in April. The boxes for the shredding material will colocated with the existing Scantron facilities.
D. Librarian Contacts – An updated list of librarians assigned in support of specific divisions was provided.
Please see attached list.
E. Online Class Size – Please consult your on-line peers and deans and return to the April meeting with some
figures, in order for the campus senate to provide meaningful numbers to the college senate updated
V.
New Business
A. Security Issues: There is a “growing” incidence of “flashing” on the campus, in particular in the JUL. While
during last month’s meeting there was an observation of a “homeless” woman bathing in a washbasin in one of
the restrooms, and since then an incident was reported on WAVY TV10 of a male “patron” masturbating in the
JUL. The senate is asking that they be notified in a timely manner, rather than through the social media. Mr.
O’Kady has been notified. The question is whether the college or campus need to develop specific policies for
this type of incident. While this is a “joint use” facility, which entity has overall control in this instance?
B. Blackboard Issues : in follow-on to last month’s report of the method of notification by eLearning as to
Blackboard issues, the faculty has triumphed and the eLearning division will revert to the previous method of
notification issues.
C. Designated Senators The results of the campus senate elections, David “Steve” DeLong was replaced by
Robert “Bob” Maynard, Sandra Dunn was replaced by Alison Harwell, and one of the adjunct positions is vacant
as Shelly Long is unable to continue. The 2014-2015 Virginia Beach designated College Representatives are;
Monica McFerrin; Mark Greer; Mike Adams; Anne Mach; Ellyn Hodgis; Gary Noah; Lou Tinaro; Kathy Buhrer; and
Frank Futyma
D. Officer Nominations The current nominees for the offices open in the Virginia Beach senate stand at:
Chair: Monica McFerrin
Vice Chair: Mark Greer; Tom Geary
Secretary: Mike Adams

E. John Gallo Classroom security issues are currently in process on campus and college wide. It has been
pointed that outward opening door in classrooms cannot be manually secured from inside. The installation of
manual deadbolts will correct this
VI.

A. Mark Greer brought up the need for faculty involvement in the College governance process. There is a shortage
of volunteers for the various committees. Interested personnel can see the committee openings online

faculty; and 14 other members.
C. The JUL will present a “Day of Learning” on April 4 & April 5.
D. The issue of “Advising Students” is being pursued, where this is ANOTHER bullet for the evaluation process, was
presented by Dean Carolyn McLellan
