Achieve Together, Learners Forever March 2014 Hello We have had a busy Spring Term and the staff have been preparing new mid-year reports on your child’s progress which will be shared with you at our next Parent Consultation evenings on 29th April and 1st May. ROOFING WORKS and AIR RAID SHELTER The works to our school roof have been going well and there were no leaks during that terrible period of wet weather. Work on the air–raid shelter had been delayed, but has started this week. Unfortunately there will have to be some disruption to the Church Close entrance and this will last until April. We will update you when this work is completed. Remember the Church Close entrance is CLOSED except for school deliveries. Thank you for your patience. WANT TO HELP OUT AT SCHOOL? - We are always looking for parent volunteers to help with reading or accompany us on trips or take children to and from sports events. The legislation for this kind of activity is changing but if you do want to help, you will need DBS clearance. If you are still keen and can spare some time, the school can put you through the DBS clearance procedure. Just contact the school office. We hope to have several parents in every class that are DBS checked. Any questions, just contact the school. SUCCESS OF LATE CARDS - Our new Late Card policy is working well. Children who are late, “catch up” on missed learning time during their first play. We hope that soon, we will have no late arrivals. All our lessons start at 8.55am. Soft start is 8.45am.Thank you for supporting this initiative and ensuring your child is at school on time and ready to learn. The number of late children has fallen from an average of 18 a day to just 7; this is brilliant news, thank you. PARENT SURVEY - We will be sending home a new survey for you to complete. Please take time to fill this in, we really do listen to you and want to work with all our community in making Deansbrook Junior a successful school. COMPUTER GAMES/LANGUAGE - Next week we will be discussing with the children the effect computer games and the internet has on children’s attitude to language and violence. As a school we are noticing a slight increase in poor language in the playground. Please could you discuss this with your children and especially pay close attention to the games ratings they are playing on Xbox and Playstation. The NSPCC have an excellent site and a section about Online Safety. Xbox and Playstation have parts of their websites dedicated to how to set up Parental controls and settings, well worth a look. FESTIVAL OF LEARNING – During the last week of term, Years 3, 4 and 5 will be performing some of the music, poetry or topic work they have been doing this term. Parents are welcome to come to the session at which their child’s class is performing. The sessions are as follows: Tuesday 1st April: 3M, 4D, 4ST, 5M Wednesday 2nd April: 3G, 4C, 5C Thursday 3rd April: 3T, 4K, 5L All will start at 9.10am and run for approx. 1 hour. We look forward to seeing you. DANCE FESTIVAL – Last week, the Deansbrook Dance Club – Maria (3G), Makayla-Faye (3M), Omonye and Nicola (3T), Hannah-Rei, Callum, Nico, Maria and Jaydah (5C), Naana, Richelle and Tiadora (5L), Kyle and Victor (5M), Nikola and Melika (6T) – performed a fabulous ‘Hip-Hop’ routine in front of a large audience at Barnet Arts Depot. It was a fantastic night, and the children got everyone clapping and cheering – Well done Deansbrook! NETBALL SUCCESS - On Wednesday 5th March the netball team took part in two tournaments held at Copthall School. In the south/west competition the team played really well, winning three games and drawing one. This meant they won their league and would go on to play in the final. This result also qualified them to play in the borough tournament against teams from all over the Barnet area. Again they did exceptionally well, winning their section and reaching the finals. Against some tough competition they came 3rd overall, winning a bronze medal. WELL DONE to Shaylah 6JM, Sebastian, Jasmine, Abdul & Mohamed 6NM, Shomi, Aderinsola & Sarah 6T. You were all fantastic, On Tuesday 18th March the team played their 2nd tournament final, held here at Deansbrook. In the semi-final we played against St Paul's. It was a close game but we won 2-1 with goals from Jasmine & Sebastian. This put us through to the final against St Joseph's. Again it was a close game but a goal scored by Abdul was enough to win the game 1-0. As tournament winners each member received a gold medal. Again a HUGE well done to Shaylah 6JM, Sebastian, Abdul, Jasmine & Mohamed 6NM, Aderinsola & Shomi 6T. FOOTBALL FOCUS – Abdul (6NM) reports: Deansbrook football team is playing extremely well this season. We don’t win every match, but we are currently at third place in the league, and on 13th March, we won 7-1 against Woodcroft School at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre, and the Man of the Match was Abdul. The current squad from which the team is picked is Rron (captain), Daniel (goalkeeper) Ziyad, Sebastian, Abdul, Toby, Alfie, Hadley, Youssef, Adam B and Nico. Thanks to our great coach Mr. Conlon, no-one has ever had a yellow or red card. If you are in Year 5 or 6 and your aim is to play for the football team, the first step is to come to football club and keep training – you never know, you could be a football legend of the future!
