BERNARDS HIGH MARCHING BAND WINS PRESTIGIOUS YAMAHA CUP AWARD
Bernardsville, NJ, October 7, 2013 - The Mighty Bernards High School Marching Band Mountaineers were awarded the 3rd
Place trophy this past weekend at the home of the New York Giants and Jets, MetLife Stadium.
Bernards High participated in the prestigious Yamaha Cup with 50 other talented marching bands from the region.
The theme of the Mountaineers’ 2013 show is The Rise and Fall of Rome, which explores the wonders of Roman
architecture and the influence that religion had on the ancient civilization. The musicians perform and enact three
movements. “Chisels and Stone,” portrays the chiseling of stone and assembly and erection of large Roman columns; the
music of “Catacombs” is somber and reverent, capturing the dark side of the glorious Roman culture. The show concludes
with the third movement, “Pagan Dance and the Great Fire,” a revelry of celebration that features a somewhat ominous
undercurrent of ritualistic percussion, and ultimately ends with the cataclysmic fires that started in wooden shops and houses
around the Circus Maximus, destroying untold structures, including Nero’s palace and a variety of temples.
During these pieces the band and color guard carry out complex music and choreography which make for an impressive,
entertaining and now, award-winning show.
Band Director Fred Trumpy declared, “The Marching Mountaineers performed very well. The kids have made huge
improvements over the past 2 weeks and took another big step at the Yamaha Cup.”
Trumpy added, “It was a very rewarding experience and I am quite proud of the students. We have definitely set ourselves
up for success in New York City’s Columbus Day Parade this coming Monday, October 14th.”
But their schedule does not end there. The following Saturday, October 19th the Marching Mountaineers head to Rutgers
University to face 53 bands performing in the annual New Jersey States Competition.
Their official season concludes with a busy weekend, as the Band takes the field to perform at the Bernards final home
football game at 7 pm, Friday October 25 and concludes the following day on the field at Ridge High School’s Annual
Marching Band Competition on Saturday, October 26.
