Presidents Message
Managers Message
I cannot believe we are into September, the start of
the Fall/Winter leagues. 2011 has gone by very quickly. I
hope everyone had a great summer and is looking forward to
the upcoming bowling season.
First, I would like to thank everyone who participated
in the 75th Anniversary KBA Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet this year at the Holiday Inn. It was a great night to not
only honor the tournament award winners, the hall of fame
inductees and the scholarship winners, but also to celebrate the
KBA’s 75th Anniversary. Davis Mannello did a great job in
putting together a 75th Anniversary Journal. He highlighted
some of the history of bowling in the Kingston area as well as
tournament winners for most of the years we had a tournament. We actually still have some journals left over as well as
75th anniversary pins, just contact a KBA board of director if
you are interested in one. I would also like to thank Ken
LaCasse who ran the KBA tournaments for the last few decades. He has volunteered many hours of his time not just at
the tournaments, but behind the scenes to make sure everything ran well. Thank you Ken for a fine job well done.
I cannot believe my two year term as president is up.
I have been honored to be your association president and
would like to thank the KBA Board of Directors for that opportunity. I understand that it has not been the best of economic times with job losses and price increases of just about
everything. Some bowlers who bowled in two or three
leagues can barely afford to bowl in one. All we can do is
hang in there and hope things turn around quickly for the best.
Lastly, I would like to send our prayers and well
wishes to those of you affected by the devastation from Hurricane/Tropical Storm’s Irene & Lee. Some of our area has
seen catastrophic damage to homes and businesses. We hope
that conditions will improve and you can get back on your feet
again.
Good Luck and Good Bowling,
Kevin DeGroodt – KBA President
USBC.
Welcome to yet another season under the auspices of
As in previous years, a new season brings with it new
changes. Your secretary will inform you of the changes in
awards.
Individual applications for membership: Again,
please make sure all blanks are filled in. Use your given
name, include current address, date of birth, telephone number, etc. If dues are paid through another league other than
your league, make sure you list the league name through
which the dues were paid, sign it, date it, make sure you fill
in “all” of the blanks! Dues are still the same this year with
no increase. Dues are $20.00 for the KBA. If you paid dues
in another association, Saugerties, Duchess County, etc, you
must pay KBA dues of $9.00. Also all women who wish to
bowl in the men’s tournament must be sanctioned in the KBA
and they must pay the $9.00 fee. Remember print everything
on the sanction cards except your signature.
The KBA is here to serve you to the best of
our ability but if we don’t get the proper information how are
we to know? Again have a safe and fun filled season.
Finally I know some of you are tired of hearing this
but it is in need of repeating, please make sure the people you
elect as your officers are doing the job you elected them to do.
A president, vice president, secretary and treasurer have a specific job to do and it is important that it is done properly to
insure a secure league. Checks and balances need to be adhered to.

A Special Thank You
The board wishes to thank Ken LaCasse for his many
years of running this tournament in a professional
manner. Ken is stepping down but not out, he will
remain active in this organization for many more
years. As we reflect back on Ken’s accomplishments
we are reminded that he spent many hours doing everything by hand for years and now he has got us into
the computer age. Now the changes are made and the
sheets come out to the lanes with all corrections,
name changes, averages, handicaps which he developed on his own. The board is very grateful to have a
man taking over this job who is also very dedicated
and we know he will do an excellent job. In closing
it will not be the same but we hope you will not notice, but we the board will I am sure.
Our organization has been in existence for 75 years
with many changes. The following is from our 75 th
anniversary banquet booklet which was compiled by
Davis Mannello III.
History of Area Bowling Lanes
Early American author Washington Irving who
gained immortality for his novel, The Legend of
Sleepy Hollow, surmised that the thunder that rolled
across the Catskill Mountains was just old Rip Van
Winkle and some of his cronies playing bowling,
after he emerged from his 20-year sleep. The exact
locale was supposed to be the area around Palenville.
Tracing the history of bowling lanes in Ulster
County was not an easy task. According to research
done by the late K.B.A. Historian Clifton Quick, the
first recorded tenpin establishments surfaced in 1903
when lanes were built at Schoentag’s in Glasco, the
Community House in Saugerties, and two at the Red
House in Lake Katrine. A year later two new 2laners were opened in Kingston---at the Hotel Ronan
located at 286 Wall St., and also at the long forgotten
locale at the Kingston Point.
The first modern establishment to be built in Kingston was the four-lane setup at the Y.M.C.A. on
Broadway in 1913, a year after the Y opened. The
next was a two lane setup at St. Peters Church on
lower Broadway.
We acknowledge that other lanes may have been
overlooked and if we have, please let us know about
it. Lanes affiliated with the Kingston Bowling Association began our existence in 1936. Our research
shows that Ulster County lanes appeared in the following order:
1903-Schoentag’s, Glasco; Community House, Saugerties; and The Red House, Lake Katrine, 1904-two
lanes at Kingston Point; The Hotel Ronan, Kingston,
1913-YMCA, Broadway, Kingston, 4lanes, 1919-St.
Peters Church, Kingston, 2 lanes, 1920-Elks Lodge,
Fair St., Kingston, 2-lanes; Colonial Lanes, North
Front St., Kingston, 4 lanes, 1935-Emerick’s Recreation, Albany Ave., Kingston, 8 lanes, 1937-Ferraro’s
Central Rec., Railroad Ave, Kingston, 8 lanes, 1939San-Mar Recreation, Saugerties, 8 Lanes, 1948Ruzzo Bowlatorium, Grand St., Kingston, 14 lanes,
1949-Ferraro’s Bowlodrome, Cornell St., Kingston
14 lanes; New Paltz Bowling Center, 12 lanes; The
Chalet, Rosendale, 6 lanes, 1957-Ferraro’s Bowlato-
rium, first phase, East Chester St. Ext., 26 lanes,
1959-added 14 lanes; 1967 added final 12 lanes for a
total of 52; Later was sold to Hoe Bowl Corp., renamed Hoe Bowl on the Hill. Hoe Bowl changed 12
lanes to candle pin bowling for a short period of time,
now they currently have 40 lanes, 1958-Sangi’s Bowlero, Cedar St., Kingston, 16 lanes; later purchased
by John Ferraro and renamed Mid-City Lanes and
expanded to 24 lanes now 26, 1961-Woodstock
Lanes, 14 lanes; Boiceville-Lanes, 10 lanes, 1963Collage Lanes, New Paltz, 24 lanes.
There have been no new establishments built since
1963.
Added note: Many of these lanes no longer exist
but there memories will remain in those who bowled
in them for many more years.

Fireman’s League in 1972. He joined the Ferroxcube
League in 1975 and was elected Vice President.
Charles was elevated to the position of President in
1976. The league has since changed it’s name to Our
League but Charles is still at the helm. He got the
whole family into bowling in 1977. He took a coaching class with his wife Judy, and they have been helping bowlers both young and old ever since. Charles
became a member of the KBA and the UCYABA
Board of Directors in 1998 and served until 2002. He
has bowled in the KBA Tournament from 1972 to
2003, except for 2001 when Charles was serving his
country during the Gulf War. He supports Youth
bowlers on and off the lanes, whether it is a ride to a
tournament or a tip to improve their bowling.
Charles is an avid supporter of the KHS Bowling
Team. Charles has watched his children grow up on
the lanes and now takes great pride in watching his
grandchildren (7 out of 9), in their bowling careers.
It is our honor to welcome Charles to the KBA Hall
of Fame.
2011-2012 Board of Directors
Currently the board has 24 members who are dedicated to making the sport of bowling enjoyable to all
who participate in the two (2) houses we serve, Mid
City Lanes and Hoe Bowl on Hill.
Our board President is Pat Glass
Our 1st Vice President is Rick Campbell
Our 2nd Vice President is Joe Sauers Sr.
Our 3rd Vice President is Ron Diers
Our Association Manager is Robert Boughton Sr.
Our Asst. Assoc. Manager is Davis Mannello III
The rest of the board of directors in no certain order
are;
Ron Jackson, Daniel Lowe, Don Quesnell, Jim Rose,
Robert Charmello Sr., Anthony Schmiderer, Joe
Swart, Mike Mowry, Jim McKenzie, Jerry Smith, Art
Houghtaling, Eddie J. Torres, Kevin DeGroodt, Joe
Sauers Jr., Bruce Ean Sr., Robert Ploss, D. J. Quesnell & Ken LaCasse.
Our new asst. association manager has some ideas
to increase participation in bowling outside of league
bowling. Please check with you presidents, secretaries if you are interested. Davis has not officially
started anything but is working on it. Please if anyone has any complaints, suggestions or comments get
with your league officers or contact one of the board
members. If we can be of any help I am sure we will
do what we can to resolve or correct it. We cannot
do anything about the way the USBC is structured
but if it is something else I am sure we can listen to
you.
The membership is decreasing every year and this
is an area that our members may be able to point us
in a direction to keep people from leaving. We understand that the economy is not the greatest and the
cost of bowling seems to increase every year, but
there is nothing we can do about this. We also know
that that is not the sole reason that there has been a
decrease in enrolment. Some claim that the season is
too long, this is something you can work out with
your team officials, ask if they can offer a shorter
season. Other ideas can be bought to the attention of
the officers to keep you in the fold.
