Noozletta@lionsclubs.org.nz Editorial: I have included the information about the Balloons again. As in the minutes, a resolution was put to the meeting to donate $2000 to each of; St John’s; - Westpac Rescue Helicopter; - Lions Cancer Lodge; - and The Ronald McDonald Family Retreat. This will be put to all members attending the next Dinner Meeting for final approval. Note: ‘The Ronald McDonald Family Retreat’ is two houses on the shore of Rotorua in which families that have had a very stressful time due to illness can have one weeks break for rest & recreation. It is the first of its kind in NZ and our DG Paula’s pet project for support. A registration form for the MD202 convention in Napier is now available should anyone wish to attend, I have a copy, or visit website www.lionsclubs.org.nz Don’t forget to return your ‘Balloon’ raffle butts and money to Colleen. President’s Report: Time flies. The annual Convention has been and gone. For those who went we had an enjoyable time. It was great watching DG Paula’s reaction when her sister & brother (both from Salisbury) turned up at the flag ceremony. The Business Session was interesting and Rachel enjoyed the session she attended. I don’t know how Jim H does it but he found another fantastic singer (Kate Trigg). Kate gave us a great sample of her talent. The band of the night (Grey Haired Daddies) kept everyone entertained and busy dancing. I found the Sunday service quite moving and realised just how much our Lions’ members who pass on mean to their fellow club members. Thanks to those who helped with transport and parking. Our last tea meeting was a wonderful night’ I’d long forgotten how heavy the steering is on the older cars. (Thanks to power steering). Some of the driving was interesting, some participants were better than others but fun was had by all. A nice pleasant night. Thanks to Rodney for a great night. Balloons over Waikato: Peter Knox would like helpers for Sat morning 28th March - 6am to 9am Please let me know if you can make it. John Wood Hi Fellow Lions May I extend my heartiest CONGRATULATIONS to all of your club members who helped make the Convention a successful event. The time and effort you all put into it was nothing short of amazing and the reward was the fact that everyone seemed to enjoy it. I received many complimentary comments on behalf of the committee and I know a lot of you also received the same - it is great to know that the event we organised together was much appreciated. The venue choices we made proved to be superb. The Kihikihi Club could NOT have done this on their own and on behalf of them, a huge THANK YOU. Personally, I have enjoyed working with everyone, we made a great team and I believe by joining forces it has cemented the relationship between all the clubs. Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done and thanks so … so much from me Cheers, Ross Bradstreet First dinner meeting, 2015. Our first dinner was held at Rodney’s home, it was a pot-luck, and a gymkhana. Before dinner we pulled names out of a hat to make up teams of driver, and navigator. Rodney had his lovely Daimler/Jag as the vehicle to drive, each team had to two tasks to perform. Firstly a rope was tied to a peg with a small wheel part way up the rope which was supposed to stay on the ground. The navigator had hold of the rope out the car window giving instructions to the driver so as to achieve this, and the car had to manoeuvre around the peg. Points were deducted if the wheel came off the ground or the wheels of the car stopped. Secondly, balloons were hanging on rope, the navigator had a “flounder spear” in hand, and once again had to advise the driver so as to line up the balloon to be popped. When that was done there was a hard sharp left turn and drive as close as possible to a “witches hat” without touching it. Points off if too close, disqualified if too far away or touching hat. Then reverse and head up the home straight like a rural paper delivery run, the navigator throwing up rolled up newspapers into circles marked out intermittently on the grass. This event was timed which also came into the points equation. Both events required great skill and co-operation. After all this fun and games, the BBQ’s were fired up and dinner was served in no time. Yummy dinner, thank you everyone. Prizes were awarded to the first, second and third place getters on points. A great start to our Lions year, many thanks Rodney, a most enjoyable evening was had by all. Noelene Jolley Aside: A few weeks ago as I was approaching Mangapiko a cloud of dust arose from the paddock behind the Hall. As the dust cleared I saw a pile of rubbish in the middle of the paddock and thought that was very generous of Thomas to allow the use of the paddock like that. However as I got closer I realised it was the remains of a helicopter and someone was crawling out of it. Some of the guys (who have been spending our donated money on the Hall) were running over to it while another was trying to explain where Mangapiko was to the 111 call centre. I jumped the fence to help out. It slowly dawned on me that the guy, looking dazed, wandering around picking up pieces had been in the chopper as well, and so two bruised but not broken guys had come out of a mangled wreck. There wasn’t much left to do except demolish a fence to let emergency services in. While looking at the tangled wreckage, I thought: If you are going to do something dangerous. First check your nuts!! Cheers Warwick. Plant Sale April 2015 GRAB YOUR PLANTS FOR SPRING COLOUR The date for the Lions Plant Sale is Sunday 12th April at 9am and will be held at 1 Oak Lane, Pirongia (by the cemetery) as there’s plenty of parking and space. I have collected a lot of plants but don’t have shaded space for any more at the moment (Oak Lane seems to be a broiling sun trap). About two weeks before the sale I’ll be happy to collect any plants or garden sundries that people may have for the sale, or you can drop them in on your way to Te Awamutu..For example you may have some surplus bulbs we can pop in bags – I will be doing some freesias. Currently planning the Publicity – some notices for the shop and community notices boards, 2 adverts (and a brief article) for the Courier, Lions District email Noozletter notification, and some other ideas from the Business Meeting. The Lions Convention “Publicity” breakout session was very useful. On the day, it would be great to have helpers at the stalls to take the cash. I will need to get hold of: Money aprons Trestle tables Plastic chairs for helpers Lions Event notice boards Lions Banner Plastic Bags So I’ll be chasing these up nearer the time. Please call Rachel Duncan on 07 871 9144 if you have any ideas or ways to help make this event a surprise and success.
