Gulf Shore Home and School Meeting Date: Wednesday, March 4th, 2015 Meeting Time: 7:00pm I. Welcome: Meeting opened at 7:05 II. Adoption of March 4th Agenda: Lori Ann MacFarlane approved the agenda as distributed and seconded by Marsha Doucette III. Minutes from our last meeting: Adoption of the January’s meeting minutes were approved and adopted as read by Marti Hopson IV. Business Arising from the minutes: A. Wall Murals (Maurice Bernard): Mary Jane Ready (Principle) suggested that a committee be formed in consultation with Heather MacNeil (teacher) to create a plan/proposal in order to meet the Spring deadline for Parent Leadership Grant ACTION: Lisa Langdale will meet with Heather MacNeil to discuss. V. B. Thank-you Cards made by Students: It was felt that the Gulf Students could take part in creating the Thank-you cards for those that have contributed in some way to the school to show our appreciation. ACTION: Mary Jane Ready will discuss options/ideas with both Heather MacNeil and Isabelle Oulton as well have students create and design thank-you cards felt 25-30 cards should be designed. C. Teacher Appreciation Online Sign Up (Feedback): This year we used an online sign up (www.jooners.com – online sign-up sheet) for parents/guardians which, allowed them to go online and advise what day and treat/snack they would be providing. Feedback was it was organized advised what dates snacks were needed and advised parents/guardians what types of items were being brought in to teachers and staff of Gulf Shore School. Decision: All H&S members in attendance decided it would be a benefit to use the online sign- up sheet for other future events. . Correspondence: No correspondence to share with H&S members. VI. Treasurer’s Report (Shannon Johnston): Please see Treasurers Report distributed by Shannon. Shannon did advise that there was an overcharge done by Robin’s Donuts, and has contacted them to have resolved. VII. Principals Report (Mary Jane Ready): A. Thank-you : Mary Jane expressed a sincere thank-you to all students, parents and guardians who expressed their appreciation over the week with the tasty treats, heart felts notes/cards etc B. Free Milk Day: Will be taking place the end of March C. Food For Thought Cupboard: Tracy Michael from the PEI Healthy Food Alliance has provided information in regards to healthy eating and will be working with the School to promote and assist with Healthy eating/snack items etc. Was also advised there is a Snack Program that is being offered where students develop life skills regarding food preparation sills, food safety, cleanness etc. A funding form will be completed and forwarded to Shannon Ochsner. ACTION: Mary Jane will complete the Snack Program funding form to ensure we have funding for next year. D. Bluefield Registration: Will be taking place at the end of March. There have been a few changes to the qualification for students who are graduating as well changes to the graduation transition training “life plan” in the future you will pick your course over the next 3yrs while in high school, Starting in 2016 students will have to successfully complete a new literacy assessment in order to graduate. There will also be new required credits in physical education, career education and Canadian social studies for students in the English Language School Board. In the French Language School Board there will be no changes to course requirements, but students will still have to complete the literacy assessment to graduate E. School Science Fair: Taking place on March 12th, parents and guardians are able to attend. Provincial Science Fair is scheduled for April 8th, 2015. F. Sport Activities: Afterschool badminton will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3pm4:30pm. Gulf Shore will be hosting the Zone 3 Wrestling Tournament on Thursday, April 2nd. G. Band Days: Scheduled for April 9th, 2015 H. Seniors Health Expo: Is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15th at Gulf Shore School from 12:30pm – 3:30pm. This is for seniors, but all are welcome. This is a free event designed to give you an opportunity to become familiar with some of the Health and Wellness Services that are available in our community ie. Registered Massage Therapy, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Eternal Fitness, Healthy Steps etc. I. Star of the Seas Seniors Club Drama Group: Will present “Use it or Lose it 2015” a variety show on Thursday, April 23rd, 7pm at Gulf Shore Consolidated School. J. Provincial ELA Assessments: Grade 9 will take part in the Literacy Assessments scheduled for April 14, 15, 21 & 22nd VIII. New Business: A. Hotlunches.net: Is an online tool and software application to manage school hot lunch program, fundraising activities etc. It is an easy to use online system developed specifically for school hot lunch programs and school councils. It is a system for placing and management of school hot lunch programs. No Transaction fees, no limits on the number of menu dates, menu items, number of orders or frequency of order placement. Lisa felt this would be a great option moving forward especially with all the storm days etc, this would allow parents to purchase milk tokens, pizza etc online. 14 other schools are using this system, it is customizable and they advise would offer a free trial from November until the end of the school year after that the “Standard Model” cost is $300per year. ACTION: Lisa L will contact Hotlunches to determine concerns regarding security, inventory ets Decision: Mary Jane moved to trial software once all questions are answered. Will then meet and discuss the “pros & cons”, tweaks etc of the system to determine if we will move forward with this software option. B. Annual Meeting & Convention: The Annual Home and School Meeting will be taking place on Saturday, April 11th, 8:30am-4pm. Three afternoon workshops will be offered which will include 1. Progress Monitoring, 2. Graduation Planner and 3. Are we feeding our students? Shannon J, Julie W and Lori Ann M volunteered to attend as well other that wish to attend can contact Lisa Langdale for registrations. The Annual Report will be posted on our H&S website and Facebook Group. C. Town Hall meeting for potential MLA’s to discuss education: Lisa advised parent Sandra Skeffington had requested this item be put on the agenda. Felt that this would be a great opportunity to have all 3 MLA’s (Conservative, Liberal, NDP) attend an town hall meeting where the community will be in attendance. Felt a brainstorming activity take place where questions are formed in regards to education and how each MLA would address this topic. ACTION: As a Home & School body a motion was made to attempt a Town Hall meeting to include the areas MLA’s to discussion education etc. Meeting adjourned at 8:35pm Next Home and School Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 at 7pm in the Science Lab
