North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Instructional Technology IMPACT Collection Guidelines Northwest Halifax High School Library Media Centers the Heartbeat to Our Learning Community Library resources in all cases will enable the individual to make up the Program of Studies. The library recognizes that many materials are controversial and that at any given item may offend a student. But, it depends on the student’s interest in the material. The library does not restrict access to library materials based on the age of the user. There may be a rare occasion when an exception is made to this policy, but only with the library director’s approval and due to unusual circumstances. Library collections are related to the success of students that are engaged in the process of learning and discovering. Text books were the primary focus of this learning, but now things have changed. We now offer different ways of learning including visual, digital, and online learning. This library is using this collection development plan because the book ratio is less than ten books per student. This library at Northwest Halifax High School has eighty nooks that are being used and will probably increase in the future as the years go by. Sphere The primary responsibility of the Northwest Halifax High School Library is to serve the students and teachers of Northwest by providing a broad choice of materials to meet their informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs. Materials are selected to aid individuals, groups, and organizations attain practical solutions to daily problems, and to enrich the quality of life for all school students and staff. Budget and space limitations, as well as local needs, preclude the library from duplicating the specialized and comprehensive collections that exist elsewhere. Access to these collections is provided through cooperative networking, interlibrary loan, and direct referral. All outlets of the Northwest Halifax Library system are designed to provide access on an equal basis to the collections of both the students of Northwest and the teachers. Formats Plans are to find funding to weeding books. The library is continuing to work towards updating the collection of 48 new books and 80 Nooks (Electronic Reading Devices). The library will have materials in a variety of formats, including: Print (novels, magazines, maps, newspapers, sports, fiction and non-fiction, NC Department of Public Instruction Request for lexile leveled books) Non-Print (DVD’s, MP3’s, CD’s, steaming videos) Electronic (E-books, online database subscriptions, current collection of 80 Nooks, 30 E-books at teachers request) Projected Expectations The library will gather material in the areas: Civics and Local Government Global Issues Media Awareness Age appropriate, nonfiction North Carolina History Biology and Physical Science Digital Communications Foreign Languages Common Core High Low, STEM Catalog (to use for research) Common Core Essentials Science and Math Language and Literature The Social Sciences Fiction and Nonfiction Civics and Local Government US History and Culture Teen issues and Social Skills The library will continue to gather literature in the students, staff and parents interest.
