A Map of the County of Devon, with the City and County of Exeter, Delineated from an Actual Survey, on Twelve Sheets of Imperial Paper, the Scale an Inch to a Mile. By Benjamin Donn, Teacher of Mathematics, &c. late of Bideford, now of the City of Bristol. London: Printed for The Author, 1765. First Ed. Atlas folio ( 540 x 400 ). Book. Near Fine. Contemporary half crimson morocco, marbled boards and matching endpapers. Contents clean and fresh, a near perfect copy of this highly important large scale map of Devon, published in atlas form. In 1754, the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce, was founded in London -- since 1847, it has been known as the Royal Society of Arts. It was at the suggestion of one of its Cornish members, the antiquarian William Borlase, that the Society decided to offer a "premium" for an actual large-scale survey of a county. In 1760, Benjamin Donn began work on his immense task to survey the county of Devon. After many difficulties the work was completed in 1765. The Society accepted the map as an "accurate, actual survey", and awarded Donn a gratuity of £100. Ironically Donn estimated the survey cost nearly £2000. It is impossible to over estimate the importance of Donn's accurate map to the archaeologist, historian, and topographer. Here is recorded the face of the County of nearly two hundred and fifty years ago: roads, rivers, principle towns, villages, mileage distances between towns, even some individual houses, all are shown, together with a mass of other information. This is the first large scale map of Devon, or any other County; a magnificent copy of this major contribution to the history of English cartography.
