Virology Test #1 – Spring, 2014 NAME:____________________________________________________________ Instructions: This test has two parts. In Part I, answer 5 of the 6 questions clearly indicating which questions you want me to grade (15 points each). Part II has one essay worth 25 points. All students must answer that question. Part 1: Answer 5 of the following 6 questions Question 1: Write the number of the descriptor in Column B in the space next to its matching term in Column A. Column A _______ Column B gD 1. Required for replication of viral DNA 2. Needed for maintenance of Herpes latency __________ VP16 __________ IE genes __________ __________ Vector polymerase processivity factor 3. Needed for expression of late genes 4. Transmits virus from one host to another 5. Required for binding to host cell 6. Required for packaging of viral genome into capsid 7. Needed for expression of immediate early genes Question 2: How do common source epidemics differ from host to host epidemics? State how each starts and describe (or draw) the typical disease outbreak pattern that you would expect to see in each case. Question 3: Briefly describe one biological, one social and one environmental factor that can increase the occurrence or severity of disease outbreaks (and how it does so). Question 4: In order to replicate in permissive cells, viruses must be able to 1) attach and enter the cell, to 2) replicate their nucleic acids and 3) express their proteins before finally emerging from the host cell once again. List three specific characteristics/components that our cells must have (one for each of the three critical stages listed above; naming molecules, as appropriate) that make them permissive to herpesvirus infections. Question 5: Virus nucleic acids can be very different from ours. Tell what the defining characteristics of Baltimore type III virus are, clearly defining the difference between (+) and (-) nucleic acid strands. Part Two Essay: List the steps in a typical epidemiological investigation of a disease outbreak and then describe how you and your classmates have (or have not - yet) dealt with each of those steps in our class “Outbreak San Diego!” scenario. Be complete, making sure to describe the work of other teams, in addition to your own. Given your answer, what do you think the class should prioritize (describe two things) as it moves forward into the next phase of this outbreak investigation. (25 points).
