Programme Outline
Cuckoo the puppet brings you to Stanley today not only to explore the shopping
market but also the cemetery, beaches and historic buildings. By visiting the places
and old buildings in Stanley such as the cemetery, the beaches and the Tin Hau
Temple, you may learn more about how the Chinese festivals are celebrated
throughout the year.
Communicative functions
1. Identify some scenic spots in Hong Kong such as the shopping market, the beaches,
and the historic buildings in Stanley, e.g., Murray House, the old Police Station
2. Describe what people do regularly and when and how they do it by introducing
the Chinese festivals and activities
Suggested activities
1. Print out COPYMASTER 1 for introducing Cuckoo the puppet and Stanley on
Hong Kong Island.
2. To motivate pupils’ interest, ask pupils to guess what they can find in Stanley. Tell
them to tick in the boxes next to the pictures in COPYMASTER 2 Part A.
3. Then watch the programme together to see what they can find in Stanley.
4. After viewing, teacher asks pupils to think about the answers to Cuckoo’s questions.
They may need some discussions and references. Allow them to do so in class.
Replay the segment near the end of the programme if necessary. In
COPYMASTER 2 Part B, pupils have to write their answers in the space provided.
Short answers are also acceptable.

Suggested answer:
“R-I-P” means “Rest In Peace”. It’s a wish that the dead may rest in peace.

Suggested answers:
The Ching Ming Festival. It is a festival in spring.
There’s another festival called Chung Yeung Festival. It’s in autumn. People
go mountain climbing to worship their ancestors.
c. Do you know during which Chinese festival when people have boat races?
Suggested answer:
The Dragon Boat Festival. This festival falls on the fifth day of May in the
lunar calendar. People eat rice dumplings and watch dragon boat racing.
d. Some people celebrate the birthday of Tin Hau. The festival is in March in the
lunar calendar. What is that festival?
Answer:
That’s the Tin Hau Festival. We can see lion dances and parade near Tin Hau
temples.
5. Besides sightseeing, what else pupils want to do in Stanley? Ask pupils to write
them down in COPYMASTER 3.

Swimming, having a barbeque, watching boat races, windsurfing, shopping, photo
taking, etc.
